"These are not the droids you're looking for." One reason that Obi Wan Kenobi quote is so well known and so often invoked with a wink is because it succinctly captures American politics' most favorite bait and switch: the tactic whereby partisans deny the existence of a phenomenon that's there for everyone to see, all so that the phenomenon can continue unabated. This "Star Wars"-ism, indeed, is a perfect way to understand the way Islamophobia works in America, and not because of Tatooine's Arabian aesthetic (it was filmed in Tunisia), but because the way so many seem intent on pretending anti-Muslim sentiment doesn't exist, all to make sure it continues to flourish.

The movement's most popular leaders from a 2010 poll have all either lost their jobs -- or fled

Who are the names that come to mind when you think about leaders of the Tea Party movement? Maybe Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Jim DeMint, Ron Paul and Michele Bachmann? Those were the most popular leaders listed by self-identified Tea Party activists in a 2010 Washington Post poll, at the height of the movement. You could add to that list a handful of other congressmen, especially outspoken Reps. Steve King, Allen West and Joe Walsh, among others.

And then you’d realize that every single one of them either lost their job or abandoned being a voice of the movement.

The 2012 election was devastating for the outspoken leaders in Congress. Allen West lost after a protracted battle, Joe Walsh was trounced by rising star Tammy Duckworth, and Ron Paul retired. Other, lesser-known members like Roscoe Barlett also lost. The two House Tea Party Caucus members who ran for the Senate last year both lost -- Reps. Denny Rehberg in Montana and Todd Akin in Missouri.

Meanwhile Jim DeMint, the most prominent Tea Party leader in the Senate, who funded primary challenges against more moderate Republicans, left the Senate a month after the election to head the Heritage Foundation.

When cancer was suspected during my pregnancy, I faced a decision no woman wants -- and few politicians understand

Twelve weeks into my pregnancy, my spouse and I were delighted to see our “bean” on ultrasound. We thrilled to the sight of a four-chambered squeezing heart, an enormous head, and tiny, thrashing limbs. When the technician glimpsed an unusual growth on my ovary, we barely paid attention. Only a biopsy could determine what those bulbous shadows in the ultrasound were, but the doctor explained it was either a benign cyst (very likely) or cancer (very unlikely). The chances that the biopsy would result in miscarriage were slightly greater than the odds that the growth would threaten my health if left alone. Buoyed by the doctor’s assurances that the baby looked great, we decided the biopsy was a bad bet.

At the ultrasound eight weeks later, we laughed when we found out the baby was a girl. Her older sister was vibrating in anticipation of learning her sibling’s gender and entirely unprepared to accept the possibility of a little brother. The ultrasound technician found nothing troubling when she scanned the baby’s anatomy. Turning her attention to my ovaries, though, she saw a black circle that she couldn’t interpret. When they told me I could get dressed before the doctor came to talk to us, my spouse and I exchanged an anxious look: They never let you put your pants back on. The cyst on my ovary had grown significantly, it seemed, and now they thought they saw another growth on the other ovary, developments that could put my health and the baby’s at risk.

Rep. Joe Walsh, R-Ill., said a debate last night that he is against abortion "without exception," even in cases of rape, incest, and when the life of the mother is in danger. When asked by reporters if he means that it's never medically necessary to save a pregnant woman's life, Walsh said "absolutely."

“With modern technology and science, you can't find one instance,” he said. “... There is no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing.”

Walsh, who is running for reelection, was quoted by WGN Radio after a debate with Democrat Tammy Duckworth.

Illinois Tea Party Rep. Joe Walsh, once again giving voice to the conservative id, told a crowd in Wood Dale, Ill., this weekend that he doesn't care about the rights of non-American citizens, and doesn't care if they're mistreated in what he sees as a grand struggle between the West and radical Islam. "I'm gonna do whatever I can to beat and kill that ugly, evil, radical strain [of Islam]. I'm not concerned about their rights and their liberties," Walsh said at a campaign event Saturday.

"People, my friend, those who are not American citizens. I'm not, they are trying to kill me and my kids. They are trying to kill you and your fellow Americans. I'm concerned with protecting Americans. I could give a darn about their rights, or their freedoms, or how we treat them if they are not American citizens," Walsh added. Video of the event was captured by a tracker from the CREDO super PAC, a liberal outside group connected to the progressive cellphone provider CREDO mobile.

Tammy Duckworth has perhaps the best back story in politics -- if only she could tell it better

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Archetypical politician back stories have become so cliche that political conventions seem like a parade of candidates trying to one-up each other's unlikely immigrant success, hardscrabble upbringing or heroic service origin stories. They're often inspiring, if sometimes exaggerated. But rarely can a candidate claim all at once.

The back story that Tammy Duckworth, the Democrat running against Tea Party Rep. Joe Walsh, R-Ill., told tonight stands above the rest -- on a pair of prosthetic legs. Duckworth, whom Salon interviewed a few months ago when she was at a center of a national firestorm after Walsh insulted her military service, has a story that could hardly be written by a central casting.

She is the daughter of a Marine and a Thai-Chinese immigrant, and her family fell on hard times. “At 15, I was the only one with a job -- after school, for minimum wage. Thank God for the food stamps, public education and Pell grants that helped me finish high school and college,” she said tonight, a casual slight, perhaps at programs that would be slashed by vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan’s budget. Later, she said, she joined the Army and became an assault helicopter pilot, becoming one of the first Army women to fly combat missions in Iraq.

Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat challenging Republican Rep. Joe Walsh in Illinois's 8th Congressional District, is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Illinois National Guard who lost both her legs when insurgents shot down her helicopter in Iraq. This week, Walsh, who has never served in the military, attacked Duckworth's military service, sparking a media firestorm. Duckworth spoke with Salon about Walsh, what keeps her going after losing so much and her superstitions.

What was your first reaction when you heard Walsh's comments?

Unfortunately, I was not surprised at all. This is typical of the type of things that he says. We didn’t responds the first two times. And this time, we didn’t respond at first either, but then I just felt like we had to because I think he’s undermining a lot of veterans out there. There are 23 million veterans in this country, and they should not be criticized for talking about their military service.

In a heated interview with CNN's Ashleigh Banfield this afternoon, Rep.

For the record, I don't think military service is the only route to heroism. People who are great parents are heroes in their own way.

But Illinois Rep. Joe Walsh, best known for not paying child support, has taken neither route to heroism. Instead, the Tea Party blowhard is now denying his Democratic opponent, Iraq war veteran and double amputee Tammy Duckworth, is a "true hero." (Think Progress has the whole video.) Apparently because she's been open about her military service, Walsh thinks she's showing off her sacrifice. But it's sort of hard to hide the fact that you've lost both your legs and the use of one arm (insurgents blew up her helicopter in Iraq).

That Duckworth: She's such a showoff when she enters a room in a wheelchair.

Walsh has apparently had enough of her histrionics. He told an Elk Grove town hall on Friday that Sen. John McCain was a "noble hero" because he didn't often talk about his military service. “Now I’m running against a woman who, my God, that’s all she talks about,” Walsh said.
