The singer spent the entire, star-studded MTV awards show appearing as "Jo Calderone"

Nobody has ever accused Lady Gaga of being boring. (This is, after all, the same performer who showed up to the Grammys earlier this year ensconced in a giant, translucent egg.) That being said, we're still not entirely sure what to make of Gaga's appearance at MTV's Video Music Awards last night. The pop star opened the show with a monologue and a rendition of her new single. What was remarkable about the performance was that she did it under the guise of her male alter ego, Jo Calderone.

And we weren't certain which was stranger -- the dangling umlaut in the title of the song Gaga performed ("Yoü and I") or that she continued to appear as the Calderone character for the rest of the evening

Using clips of characters walking away from the camera, can you guess what movie (and actor) you're looking at?

I'm not entirely convinced this spot for a Memphis mall store isn't a joke, since I'm pretty sure I've seen the same concept in a "Saturday Night Live" mock commercial. (I can't remember the name of the sketch, though I know it starred Kenan Thompson as a prom dress shop proprietor. If anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it!)

Update: Slavoj Zizek responds to the Post's allegations, imposter accounts

    [UPDATED BELOW]

Man, Slavoj Zizek is really getting around these days! Just last week we heard about Julian Assange auctioning a lunch and panel with himself and Zizek on eBay in an attempt to fund WikiLeaks (the first ticket went for 3,700 euros, FYI). On Monday the Slovenian professor was outed in the New York Post for spending quality time with Lady Gaga:

In a recent blog post titled "Communism Knows No Monster," Zizek called Gaga "my good friend" and said, "There is a certain performance of theory in her costumes, videos and even (some of) her music." He says her infamous meat dress is a reference to "the consistent linking in the oppressive imaginary of the patriarchy of the female body and meat, of animality and the feminine."

For a whole day back in April, it looked like Lady Gaga wasn't going to sign off on Weird Al doing a parody of "Born This Way." Luckily she ended up changing her mind, so America's No. 1 non-Internet-related musical satirist could create "Perform This Way," a highly disturbing video in which Weird Al -- a grown man -- has his face CGI'd onto a young woman's body while he/she/it prances in a number of disturbing outfits.

It might not sound that scary, but it really is.

Little monsters from all over the world join together to wish a speedy recovery to Clarence Clemons

Lady Gaga knows a little something about whipping her fans into a frothy mixture of hormones and high school. Her devoted base of "little monsters" number almost 11 million on Twitter, and they are a group ready and eager to do the bidding of a woman who dresses up like a sexless robot and sings songs about poker faces.

Could be kind of scary, right? Luckily, Gaga uses her fandom for good rather than evil, and recently had her monsters send their best regards to Clarence Clemons, saxophonist of the E Street Band and frequent collaborator with the pop star. Clarence suffered a stroke on Sunday, and since then Lady Gaga has gathered the best of her fans' videos and turned them into a 13-minute "Get Well" clip.

Here's hoping Clarence will feel the outpouring of well wishes and get better soon. We wouldn't want to see what Gaga could do with that monster power if she suddenly decided she wanted to take over the world.

Lady Gaga might have been "born this way," but her music isn't going to be accepted in at least one Middle Eastern country. According to The Christian Post, Gaga's second studio album has been banned in Lebanon for being "offensive to Christianity."

While her song "Judas" was definitely trying to rattle some cages with its "Like a Virgin"-style iconography, America largely ignored the attempt at blasphemy. But according to reports, thousands of copies of "Born This Way" were stopped by Lebanese officials and impounded on the grounds of "bad taste." "Judas" has already been banned from Lebanese radio.

The punk rocker turned sobriety advocate talks about the dangers of being surrounded by only gay men

Courtney Love has spoken! And her advice might not be as crazy it sounds. In a two-part interview with The Fix, the ex-Mrs. Cobain opens up about her past drug use, her current sobriety, and not hanging out with girls like Lindsay or Paris. "What am I, a junkie Auntie Mame," asks Courtney in a sound bite that's being passed around faster than a hash pipe at a Hole concert.

The one thing that struck me about the interview, in all its provocative glory, is what Courtney said about Lady Gaga, one of the few pop stars who is open about her drug use and (more important) hasn't had a narcotics-induced public meltdown yet.

"She may be doing fine at the moment, but I’m worried about her future. She’s very young, and she’s very talented, but she doesn’t seem to have any female friends. Or any straight guy friends for that matter. Instead, she surrounds herself with this coterie of gay stylists and advisors who’ve turned her into this weird, sexless Barbie doll. I was raised by gay guys myself, and I turned out all right in the end. But you know, you can only pull off this meat-dress act for so long. If she doesn’t watch out she’ll turn into a lonely drag queen. Straight guys just aren't in to that kind of thing. "

The company tries to make up for its disastrous promotion with a new offer. But the Little Monsters are still mad

It's true what they say about little monsters: They always turn on their creators. On Sunday, Amazon's MP3 Twitter feed casually announced "Dear @ladygaga fans, We think you might want to visit us at Midnight." And on Monday, "Born This Way," an album that's been hyped since at least last September's MTV Awards, dropped at last, with her Ladyship and Amazon giving fans the surprise treat of offering it for download for a mere 99 cents. O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay! Oh how dare you? Thanks for breaking the Internet, Gaga.

It didn't take long for the frenzy over the long-awaited album, combined with the irresistible allure of getting something for next to nothing, to take hold. The puny strength of Amazon's digital service was soon no match for the demand of Gaga's army. Frustrated fans experienced delays and flat-out failures to download. By lunchtime, Amazon was understatedly tweeting, "We're currently experiencing very high volume. If you order today, you will get the full @ladygaga album for $.99. Thanks for your patience." Patience? On the Internet? You're joking, right?

Well, it was no "Captain Jack Sparrow," but I'm sure many people were pleased to see Lonely Island/ "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg hook up with his BFF-bro Justin Timberlake in this weekend's season finale. After all, these are the guys who brought you "Dick in a Box" and "Motherlover": the former of which cemented Lonely Island's place in the "SNL" pantheon, and the latter of which was actually funny.

Unfortunately, not even Lady Gaga's presence could save the underwhelming reunion of J.T. and A.S. in "3-Way," a song that wasn't only musically boring (if Justin Timberlake and Gaga can't get some interesting harmonies going in your song, there's a problem), but about as tepid as a number about having sex with Lady Gaga could be.

Is social media cred worth more than TV and radio time? More than money? This year's power list suggests so

Forbes has come out with its annual list of the most powerful celebrities, and in a total upset, Oprah has been bumped down to second place. She's now sandwiched between Justin Bieber (third on the list) and Lady Gaga, both of whom make far less money and get less airtime than the queen of daytime television, but who have mastered the social media sphere to gain millions of devoted, cultlike followers.

You almost feel bad for Oprah: Back when she was starting out, a media personality had to fight hard to win a loyal audience and a fan base. In the era of Twitter and direct celebrity-to-fan interaction, you don't need to prove yourself over a period of years, you just have to make sure that you're a trending topic out of the gate. Then again, Oprah is still the richest celebrity out there, with a net worth of $290 million, so we doubt she's doing much crying.

Find out what happen when you combine the popular Facebook game FarmVille with unicorns, crystals and Lady Gaga

In one of the odder marketing strategies we've seen in a while, Lady Gaga is leaking tracks from her new album "Born This Way" through a farming social networking game on Facebook. In all fairness FarmVille is the most popular application on Mark Zuckerberg's site, with over 10 percent of users participating in the virtual crop-growing exercise. FarmVille is also available as an iPhone application, in case you want the experience of touching dirt from the comfort of your own smartphone.

Farmville basically works like an old-style Sims game: plow the land, get some coins for your avatar (or vice versa), trade them in for little gifts to make your pretend person happier, and forget what a soul-sucking existence you have while staring at a tiny screen. Oh! But in FarmVille you get to sync up your world with those of your friends, which explains all those annoying Facebook requests you get for the game.

The pop star attempts to create a Madonna-like controversy, but can't raise the Vatican's ire

A lot of people compare Madonna's work with Lady Gaga's, and in most cases the younger model has found ways to do it bigger, weirder and more disturbingly than her predecessor. But there is one place where Gaga can't hold a candle to Madonna, and that's pissing off the Catholic Church.

Back in 1989, Madonna's "Like a Prayer" managed to get the Vatican to release a statement condemning the video as blasphemous. Down the line, it was voted the most groundbreaking music video of all time. Lady Gaga was trying to cash in on some of that controversy with her new song "Judas," but ultimately the video was too confusing to upset anyone.

The narrative is pretty straightforward: Jesus is a Latin biker who goes clubbing with Mary Magdalene (Gaga). He and Judas get into a bar fight. It just doesn't have the same sacrilegious flavor of "Like a Prayer": In straight narrative terms it's more like one of those corny "updated" Bible stories you'd hear in Sunday school. Catholic League president Bill Donohue wouldn't even deign to call the video "anti-Catholic":

Of course, with such a focus on international news -- with the death of Osama bin Laden and the Barack Obama's decision not to release the photos -- it's been kind of hard to focus on the fun stuff.

Lady Gaga performed on "American Idol" on May 5, 2010, in order to up the hype for the new video for "Judas." There were smoke machines, masks, and all the creepy stuff we've come to expect from the Madonna-alien hybrid. But Gaga's not happy: She took to Twitter to complain that Fox edited her version down from six and a half minutes. When asked (for probably the umpteenth time) if she ripped off "Born This Way" from Madonna's "Express Yourself," the little monster got hot under the collar, claiming the only similarities were the chord progressions. Also this:

"I'm a songwriter. I’ve written loads of music. Why would I try to put out a song and think I’m getting one over on everybody? That’s retarded."

Looks like "Perform This Way" is going to make it to the album after all!

Wow, I did not know how many Weird Al fans were still out there. But as a friend pointed out recently, I'm not exactly Yankovic's prime fan base. For instance, I didn't know that his last album ("Straight Outta Lynwood") was also his most popular, making it onto the Billboard Top 10. I also didn't know that his 2006 single "White and Nerdy" made it onto the top 10, too. So there you go. Weird Al: still very, very popular.

Even Lady Gaga apparently thinks so: After I wrote a piece yesterday on Weird Al being denied permission to do a parody of "Born This Way," I received several emails regarding the incident. Lady Gaga has changed her mind! Or, wait, she never changed it because she had never heard the song in the first place, and it was all her evil manager's fault for denying Weird Al his "Perform This Way" single.
