This happened on the night when I spotted the first of many satellite vans that would defiantly park in the red zone in front of my house. The van, coupled with the all-male paparazzi contingent prowling the alley behind my garage with an abundance of video equipment, provided me with a fresh understanding of what it means to live under siege.

And so, hunkered down inside my house, I had imagined the following scenario: The actress, fleeing down the alley from these men and unable to enter her own home, would accept my offer of temporary shelter. I’d quickly usher her into my living room where I’d offer her a non-alcoholic beverage. My cats, who normally hate strangers, would allow her to pet them and she would feel inspired to reveal some shard of a more authentic self that existed beneath her celebrity train wreck veneer. She would confide her secret fears, gripes and vulnerabilities and I would nod with empathy.

Yet this week, the frequently SCRAM bracelet-accessorized, self-described "artist of many things :)" bombed out on her community service obligation by showing up 40 minutes tardy. Dear Lindsay, there is no "fashionably late" for court-appointed service.

Lohan's apparently pathological inability to get her act together has made for reliable tabloid fodder for the better part of the last decade. What's amazing – and by amazing, I mean horrible – is that the interest in her exploits refuses to die down. It's been ages since she's been in an even vaguely acclaimed movie (even "Bobby" was five years ago); her music career is nonexistent; she doesn't even have a train-wreck reality show. Unlike the late Amy Winehouse, she doesn't possess a tragic genius, a talent that burns so brightly it makes her struggles with demons frustratingly poignant. It's hard to imagine a television studio full of fans dressed up like Lindsay Lohan because her work was so meaningful. Instead, the sideshow of a once promising, effervescent and undeniably beautiful woman deteriorating in public holds a different kind of allure – the morbid "How bad can it get?" kind.

The "Mean Girls" star is due to be arraigned later today on a felony grand theft charge over the theft of a $2,500 necklace reported stolen by an upscale jewelry store.

Prosecutors are asking that bail be set at $20,000.

The charge is the latest -- and most serious -- legal problem for the actress, who remains on probation for a 2007 drunken driving case.

Police and prosecutors allege Lohan, 24, took the necklace from a store in the beachside community of Venice on Jan. 22, weeks after she was released from a rehab facility where she was also accused of misconduct.

Lohan's attorney has denied the actress stole the necklace.

"We vehemently deny these allegations and, if charges are filed, we will fight them in court, not in the press," attorney Shawn Chapman Holley said in a statement Saturday. Holley did not respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

The former Disney star has struggled with the terms of her probation, and was sentenced to rehab twice and jail twice last year.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elden S. Fox ordered Lohan to remain at the Betty Ford Center until Jan. 3 and report back to court in late February.

A prosecutor had advocated a six-month jail sentence for the "Mean Girls" star, but Fox opted for rehab after reviewing filings by probation and rehab officials and a letter written by Lohan.

Lohan cried after hearing the sentence.

The judge acknowledged that Lohan, 24, has been in-and-out of court and rehab since a pair of high-profile arrests in 2007. He told the actress that he would not be manipulated by her, but was giving her a final chance to stay clean.

"You're staying past the New Year's -- there's a reason for that," Fox said.

Fox's sentence means Lohan will not be returning to a suburban Los Angeles women's jail for a fourth time.

The judge had threatened to send Lohan to jail for 30 days for each drug test she skipped or failed. He ordered her held for nearly a month during a hearing in September, but another judge overturned his ruling and Lohan has been free on bail and in inpatient rehab voluntarily since then.

And if said possessor of a wagon he or she just can't stay on has been granted every opportunity to go straight -- counseling, support, stints at the best rehabs -- and can't manage something as simple as not getting falling-down messed up, well, that person has got to be a world-class ungrateful piece of crap. Yeah, we're talking about you, Lindsay.

Seemingly minutes after serving two weeks in jail for a probation violation stemming from her 2007 DUI, the most famously troubled actress/self-tanning entrepreneur was back in rehab for the umpteenth time. And right on cue upon her release, she flunked her latest drug test earlier this month and wound up back in handcuffs.

Bailiffs handcuffed Lohan immediately after the hearing that lasted less than 10 minutes at the Beverly Hills courthouse.

Lohan's father, Michael Lohan, said "Oh God" as his daughter rose, looked at her attorney and was handcuffed.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elden S. Fox would not listen to arguments for bail from Lohan's attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley.

It will be Lohan's third jail stint for a three-year-old drug and drunken driving case filed after a pair of high-profile arrests in 2007.

Lohan has twice been released early because of overcrowding, with her longest jail stay a 14-day stint on a 90-day sentence earlier this summer.

But this time, the judge's order diminishes the likelihood that Lohan will be released before an Oct. 22 hearing, when her positive drug test will be discussed.

"When you put the judge in a tight spot, he has no alternative," said Barry Gerald Sands, a defense attorney who has represented celebrity clients in drug cases. "She will not get out now."

The 24-year-old actress could wind up back behind bars if she is found to have violated probation.

Superior Court Judge Elden Fox issued the bench warrant in Beverly Hills, but Lohan will remain free pending a Friday court hearing, according to officials from Los Angeles County Superior Court.

A message left with Lohan's attorney was not immediately returned.

Lohan confirmed on her Twitter page last week that she failed a court-ordered drug and alcohol screening.

Lohan spent two weeks in jail this year after violating probation stemming from convictions involving her 2007 arrests for drug use and driving under the influence. She spent another 23 days undergoing rehabilitation at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

It also would allow the starlet to return to work after spending more than a month in jail and inpatient rehab.

For the next 67 days, Lohan will be expected to attend psychotherapy, drug and alcohol counseling and random drug and alcohol testing several times a week, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elden S. Fox ordered during a hearing.

If the 24-year-old star succeeds, Fox said he will allow Lohan to return to unsupervised probation and to leave Los Angeles permanently if she wishes.

If she fails to show up or doesn't pass any of the drug screenings, the judge threatened her with a 30-day jail sentence for each violation.

Lohan's attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, said her client was eager to demonstrate that she could comply with the rigid outpatient rehab requirements laid by the judge.

"She is very serious about her sobriety," Holley told the judge. Lohan, who was released from rehab hours earlier, did not attend the hearing.

According to the doctors who evaluated Lohan at the UCLA rehabilitation facilities, the 24-year-old actress does not -- repeat: does not -- suffer from drug or psychiatric problems. The root of her manic behavior, doctors say, lies in her misdiagnosis for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as ADHD, for which she was then prescribed the drug Adderall.

Dr. Joe Haraszti, a prominent Los Angeles addiction specialist, tells TMZ that the side effects of Adderall are similar to those of cocaine and methamphetamine: manic symptoms, insomnia, "driving around until all hours of the morning … smoking heavily … tweeting … and texting all night long." Wow, he just described the last three years of Lohan's life.

Department spokesman Steve Whitmore says Lohan is likely to be released on Aug. 1 or 2. The projected release date reflects all the credits Lohan is likely to receive.

The department has said the actress was likely to serve a quarter of her sentence or less.

Lohan surrendered at a Beverly Hills courthouse on Tuesday and was immediately whisked away to an all-women's jail in Lynwood. She will serve her time in an isolation unit that has previously hosted Paris Hilton and Michelle Rodriguez.

The 24-year-old's jail sentence began two weeks after a judge sentenced her to three months in jail and another three months in rehab for a probation violation.
