Of all the ways in which last week's horror in Boston showed the resilience and cooperation of a community in the wake of disaster, the tragedy will also inevitably go down as a shining example of the desperate, despicable scramble to hunt, to accuse, to blame first – and worry about ethics and responsibility later. If ever.

We saw it in the epic bungling of mainstream media outlets like CNN and the New York Post. We saw it in the frenzy of Redditors and overeager tweeters. We saw it, most cruelly, in the story of a missing student, a young man whose body may have been pulled Tuesday night from the Providence harbor.

Caught in middle of a Malkin-Colmes Twitter war

On Friday, Irin Carmon and I noted that there has been no media coverup of the grisly case of Kermit Gosnell, the doctor on trial in Philadelphia for performing illegal abortions and other crimes, and that conservative lawmakers and media figures didn't make a big issue of the case until very recently themselves.

This morning, Fox News contributor Alan Colmes said on the network that conservative blogger Michelle Malkin "wasn't covering" the case. When challenged by her fans and Malkin herself on Twitter, Colmes cited my story and suggested that I reported that Malkin only mentioned the story once on March 19. In fact, for the record, here's what I wrote:

Twitchy, the Michelle Malkin-backed conservative Twitter-activism site that has been haranguing the media for not covering the case, didn’t offer its first real mention until March 19.

Donald Trump to Michelle Malkin: “You were born stupid!”

Another day, another ten billion (eh, approximately) Twitter feuds for Donald Trump. Today's major battle comes by way of conservative commentator and Twitchy founder Michelle Malkin; it's notable only because Malkin and Trump reside (in name, at least) in the same part of the political spectrum.

Malkin provoked the attack when she dredged the past with Trump:

Trump also tweeted back his characteristically flat insults: "At least dummy is true!" and "You were born stupid!" at Malkin.

Michelle Malkin attacks Rove’s “incumbency protection racket”

The latest conservative to rally against Karl Rove is Michelle Malkin, who slammed Rove's initiative to bolster mainstream Republicans in primaries -- or, as she called, it, Rove's "incumbency protection racket."

In a paid speaking gig before the Lane Country Republican Party in Oregon, Malkin decried the Conservative Victory Project, a new plan by the Rove-backed super PAC American Crossroads to crush ultra-conservative candidates in the primaries before they can go on to prove unelectable in the general election.

Rove has been "badmouthing conservatives who've had a problem with big government Republican policies of which he is the primary architect," Malkin said at the event. "He's been badmouthing good candidates who stepped up to the plate when no one else would, who were savaged by the media and then thrown under the bus by feckless Republicans."

She added: "That's not the kind of Republican Party I want to belong to."

The right turns on Boehner after committee “purge”

The right is outraged with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, for "purging" four conservatives from their prime committee posts because they bucked party leadership in key votes.

Reps. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., and Justin Amash, R-Mich., lost their positions on the House Budget Committee for the next session. And Walter Jones, R-N.C., and David Schweikert, R-Ariz., were booted from the House Financial Services Committee.

All four lawmakers had voted against the summer 2011 deal negotiated between Republican leaders and President Barack Obama for extending the government’s ability to borrow money in exchange for $1 trillion in spending cuts and the promise of another $1 trillion in reduced deficits. Three of the four, the exception being Schweikert, voted against the Ryan-written GOP budget blueprint that the House passed last March.

A month ago, when an armed man attacked the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., conservatives blamed the fact that the organization had been labeled a “hate group” for inciting the attack. Never mind that the hate group label was intended to condemn the sort of violence that the Family Research Council’s extreme homophobic vitriol encourages. Tony Perkins, head of the FRC, said that groups that labeled his organization a hate group should be “held accountable for their reckless use of terminology.”

But now, when an offensive anti-Islam film promoted by a right-wing Christian preacher is clearly to blame for violent riots spreading thought the Middle East and appeared to have played a role in the death of a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans, the far right in America is defending extremist rhetoric against Islam and attacking the Obama administration for condemning the inflammatory film. Blind to the diplomatic urgency of quelling violence, let alone their own hypocrisy, conservatives joined Mitt Romney in accusing the president of not standing up for free speech.
