The singer defends her sexed-up new image -- and tells fans to deal with the fact she's an adult

Miley Cyrus is not a good girl gone bad. She's just a little girl grown up. In a new story in Asia's Prestige magazine, the former Hannah Montana -- who's taken heat in recent years for her underwear flaunting, lap-dancing antics -- strikes back against those who find her suddenly too controversial. "There was this magazine article the other day, showing all the younger celebrities," she says. "I was the Girl Next Door or whatever, and I fell under the category of Good Girl Gone Bad ... What the hell, man?"

As anyone who's followed Cyrus' career over the years -- and as the mother of two girls, believe me, I qualify -- could tell you, Cyrus has had a bumpy road to adulthood. The girl who became a star at age 13 has seen her rump shaking and salvia smoking horrify parents. Her vocal support of gay rights shocked conservative Christians. And as her fan base hit middle school, she was instantly rendered uncool to an entire generation.

Disney Princess. Bewigged pop star. Occasional salvia indulger and lap dancer. And increasingly, outspoken champion of gay and lesbian rights. Miley Cyrus -- who knew the girl had such gumption? Welcome to her summer of LGBT love.

Two months ago, the 18-year-old singer got in a Twitter tiff with a fellow Tennessean over "moral values" and declared she's "not gonna be a closed-minded hypocrite," before ripping into Rick Santorum and his acolytes, including "SHADYASHELL" Urban Outfitters. And last month, after the Casey Anthony verdict, she was railing on Twitter that "You know the world is skewed when people get away with murdering children but we cant get gay marriage legalized in the state of California."

Now, Cyrus has expressed her feelings a little more permanently, flaunting an equality tattoo on her ring finger and tweeting this weekend that "All LOVE is equal." And when a Christian fan took offense, she promptly snapped, "where does it say in the bible to judge others? Oh right. It doesn't. GOD is the only judge honey. GOD is love."

America's teenage dream tweets her support for marriage rights and dislike of the Rick Santorum-supporting chain

Happy first day of Pride Month – here's your pop quiz. Which of these three are openly supportive of gay rights, and which is a Rick Santorum supporter?

a) Miley Cyrus

b) Old Navy

c) Urban Outfitters

The correct answer is: a and b get their pride on, while c decidedly does not. Pride party in the USA!

Cyrus may not be the outspoken "Born This Way" icon that Gaga is, but the kid gets props for shutting down -- and openly expressing her disdain for -- intolerance this week. When a fellow Tennessean and self-professed Christian fan named Tammy Hudson took to Twitter to lament "what happened To that Christian girl from Tn with decent moral values and a lot of heart?" Cyrus promptly singled the woman out from among her over 1 million followers to call shenanigans. "What an ignorant statement," she wrote. "I dont have 'alot of heart' cuz im not gonna be a closed minded hypocrite? LOVE IS LOVE. GOD IS LOVE." It's a statement so forthright and so sadly lacking in Christian conservatism, we're willing to forgive Cyrus her "alot" and "cuz." (Hudson, meanwhile, was unmoved, elaborating later that "I didn't decide it was wrong to be gay. God did, I just follow his rules.")

The actor quit his account, but he's not the first celeb to have a love/hate relationship with the social service

So James Franco has quit Twitter today, which is a very big bummer for me, personally, as his ability to lifecast while simultaneously hosting the Oscars was kind of the highlight of my 2011 so far. Franco only managed to stay on the social networking site for a month and a half, and unlike other celebrities, his abrupt departure doesn't seem like a reaction to some feud or public misstep. So why did he quit? We look to other Twitter quitters for a clue.

See, celebrities have a difficult time with Twitter. On the one hand, it gives them direct access to their fans in a way that was previously impossible, allowing them to promote the very best version of themselves while giving the illusion that they are letting people into their private thoughts and lives. On the other hand, sometimes famous people -- like the rest of us -- forget that there is a difference between thinking something and tweeting it, and end up oversharing some thought or private picture.

When a celebrity like Willow Smith or Gwyneth Paltrow comes along, we love to roll our eyes and say, "They never would have been that successful if their parents weren't famous." Sure, there are exceptions to the rule (Robert Downey Jr. was born to be an actor), but for the most part, Hollywood nepotism works overtime to bring us a new breed of middling to terrible movie stars every year.

But don't blame the kids! Like members of the royal family, they had no choice but to follow their family's dynasty, even if they would have been happier working at a school, driving a truck or even cashing unemployment checks while trying to pay off student loans. We look at 10 celebrities with famous parents and predict what they'd be doing if they hadn't been born into extraordinary circumstances.

In an anguished new interview, Miley Cyrus' dad rails against fame -- and the perils of being a stage dad

Like countless parents around the world, Billy Ray Cyrus says that "Hannah Montana" is the bane of his existence. In a frank-to-the-point-of-wallowing new interview in GQ, the man who unleashed Miley Cyrus on an unsuspecting public four years ago -- and played her manager dad on the show -- expresses deep regret about handing his family over to the Disney empire, and unnervingly Michael Lohan-like concern for his daughter's well-being. "I'm scared for her," he says of his famous child, drawing comparisons between her current trajectory and those of Kurt Cobain, Anna Nicole Smith and Michael Jackson. "She's got a lot of people around her that's [sic] putting her in a great deal of danger."

It has not been a great year for the elder Cyrus. In October, he filed for divorce from his wife, Tish. Less than a week later, video of his daughter enthusiastically enjoying a bongful of what was later reported to be salvia surfaced. She turned 18 in November, ended her "Hannah Montana" Disney series to record-breaking ratings in January, and is now, by her father's account, living a life that's "a train wreck."

The Disney star isn't showing regret about a recent video showing her with a bong -- and it's the right move

America isn't angry with you, Miley Cyrus. It's just ... disappointed. Just in time for the Disney queen's recent 18th birthday, the Internet has been all aflutter ever since video of her working a bong like Woody Harrelson at a NORML convention surfaced on TMZ this weekend. TMZ's source's claim that Cyrus wasn't enjoying marijuana but salvia, a psychoactive herb that's legal in most states including California, has led to a sudden retail rush among consumers who want a piece of whatever Hannah Montana is smoking. And Cyrus' father has posted the inevitable Tweet of Regret, saying, "Just saw this stuff for the first time myself.
She's newly 18, but a nude photo allegedly of the then-underage starlet has hit the Web

When Miley Cyrus turned 18 last month, I thought I had seen the end of her kiddie smut scandals. It seemed apparent that, having crossed that magical line into adulthood, the starlet had at least left behind the debates over child pornography laws. But today, 10 days into her first year as a legal adult, someone posted a naked photo on the Web and claimed it was a cellphone snapshot of the singer, most likely taken before she blew out those eighteen candles.

Sigh.

Just as with any naked celebrity photo, the main question is whether it's real. (Note: I won't be linking to the uncensored version.) The gossip blog that originally posted the shot claimed that Cyrus recently had her purse and iPhone stolen. The shot in question shows a young lady taking a photo of herself in the mirror while wearing an unbuttoned plaid flannel (interesting choice) and nothing else. Her face isn't visible, but there are certainly many similarities to Miley, as numerous Internet commenters have taken great pains to point out.

I'm going out on a limb here to say, "Ew." I don't need to know if a 17-year-old has a Brazilian, but to Perez Hilton it's one more way to get people hating him, loving him, and most importantly, clicking on him. A gallery of images from Miley Cyrus' recent performance at the Much Music Video Awards includes one in which her double stick tape lost its effectiveness and her unitard scooched where it shouldn't have. This image could've been lost in the ether, but Hilton tweeted a link to it with this caveat "Oh, #Miley! Warning: If you're easily offended, do NOT click here." (You should see the list of search terms currently driving people to Salon -- it reads like a poetic ode to baser desires: Miley Cyrus upskirt, upskirt Miley photo, Cyrus upskirt Perez pics, upskirt Perez Hilton, Miley Cyrus underwear Perez Hilton -- and so on and so forth.) I was ready to take away the cotton candy and force-feed you guys some damn spinach, I really was. But then I came across a clip of Hilton last night on "The Joy Behar Show." He was his usual unapologetic self (announcing that he would post the photo again tomorrow if the agency with the rights to the image would only let him), but a couple of things did stand out.

The gossip blogger could face more than legal woes after posting an upskirt photo of Miley Cyrus

It isn't just legal punishment that Perez Hilton has to worry about. Even if he evades child pornography charges for tweeting an upskirt shot of Miley Cyrus, there is the threat of a business backlash -- and one advertiser seems to be leading the way.

MSNBC's "Today Show" reports that ABC Daytime pulled a banner ad for "The View" from the blogger's website. "It's not a matter of whether you like [Perez] or not, it has to do with the morality of the issue. Miley is a minor, period. There are ethics involved in running an ad on a site that potentially violated the rights of a minor, and that is what the conversation is about at the network level," an anonymous ABC source said.

It's funny to think that an upskirt shot of a not-quite-legal starlet is enough to offend the sensibilities of major advertisers, but Hilton's signature semen scribbles and slut-shaming is not. Regardless, depriving him of precious ad dollars seems far more appropriate than throwing the book at him, especially given the severity of child porn laws.

The delay is understandable -- if he's got any sense, he was busy talking with his lawyers and figuring out a game plan. The result of all that strategizing, however, is fairly underwhelming: In a video posted on his website, Hilton sits in a chair wearing a faux fur coat that barely covers his crotch and repeatedly crosses his legs "Basic Instrict"-style while insisting that Cyrus was wearing underwear in the photo. But, as I reported earlier, that hardly makes him immune to child pornography charges.

Blogger Perez Hilton posts a link to an alleged upskirt photo of the 17-year-old -- and could face serious charges

Perez Hilton has built a thriving career out of offensive behavior: He's called countless female celebrities bitches, hos, whores and sluts, and covered their faces in jizz using Microsoft Paint. But these things merely violate good taste -- not federal child porn law that carries a mandatory sentence of 15 years. The same cannot be said for his latest shocker: tweeting a link to an alleged upskirt photo of a pantyless 17-year-old Miley Cyrus.

The facts as we know them: On Sunday, Hilton's Twitter account sent out the following message: "If you are easily offended, do NOT click here http://i46.tinypic.com/2rze4pv.jpg Oh, Miley! Warning: truly not for the easily offended!" The photo in question has since been yanked down, but the image is allegedly of Cyrus climbing out of a car wearing a dress and no underwear (according to EarSucker.com, this is a censored version of the image in question). Now, Hilton has posted upskirt shots before of Britney Spears -- but Cyrus is roughly five months short of her 18th birthday. She's still a minor and it's legally considered child pornography.

Cue disgust: CBS News and the San Francisco Examiner report that Perez Hilton posted a photo of 17-year-old Miley Cyrus sans underwear on his Twitter account Monday.

Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, frequently publishes upskirt photos of celebrities like Britney Spears (usually exiting cars) on his website. One of the early trademarks of his blog was his addition of sometimes crude doodles to the photos he posted. Cyrus, however, is underage, so the latest photo has sparked disgust and cries of child pornography.

It is not clear whether the photo (which has been removed from Twitter but remains posted with censor on various sites) is real or edited, but either way, it makes my skin crawl.

Cyrus, in her attempts to break free of her Disney Channel chains, frequently faces scrutiny in the media for her skimpy clothing and provocative photos and dance moves. Watch her controversial, growing pain-infused music video for the song "Can't Be Tamed" below and judge for yourself.

Company plans to investigate after toxic metal shows up in necklaces and bracelets

Wal-Mart said Wednesday it is pulling an entire line of Miley Cyrus-brand necklaces and bracelets from its shelves after tests performed for The Associated Press found the jewelry contained high levels of the toxic metal cadmium.

In a statement issued three hours after AP's initial report of its findings, Wal-Mart said it would remove the jewelry while it investigates. The statement was issued along with Cyrus and Max Azria, the designer that developed the jewelry for the 17-year-old "Hannah Montana" star.

In the statement, Wal-Mart said that while the jewelry is not intended for children, "it is possible that a few younger consumers may seek it out in stores."

"We are removing all of the jewelry from sale while we investigate its compliance with our children's jewelry standard," Wal-Mart said.

Cadmium in jewelry is not known to be dangerous if the items are simply worn. Concerns come when youngsters bite or suck on the jewelry, as many children are apt to do.

Long-term exposure to cadmium can lead to bone softening and kidney failure. It is also a known carcinogen, and research suggests that it can, like lead, hinder brain development in the very young.

It isn't the star's booty-shaking. It's the behavior of the 44-year-old man on the receiving end

Today, TMZ released footage of Miley Cyrus, then 16, performing a "lap dance" on a 44-year-old man. (Technically, I believe it's a "bump-'n'-grind," but same difference.) The undercover footage was shot during a wrap party for the movie "The Last Song," and the man on the receiving end of her gluteal gyrations is the film's director, Adam Shankman. He's the same guy who caused a Twitter storm last year by posting a photo of himself cuddling up to the teenage star. At the time, Shankman, who is openly gay, defended himself by calling it just a bit of "fun" and describing Cyrus as his "angel little sister." This new video leaves less room for interpretation: There she is, freak dancing with a 44-year-old man to the tune of the Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow."

The talented singer deserves to break out of her Disney mold. Too bad her risky "Can't Be Tamed" video is so dumb

Nothing starts a ruckus on the Web quite like a squeaky clean young Disney star and a little suggestive writhing. So when Miley Cyrus debuted her pouty new music video last night -- for a song that sports the provocative name "Can't Be Tamed" -- you could practically hear indignation rolling across the land.

In the video, Miley is a rare bird in a gilded cage who wears a ton of makeup. Kind of like the chicken lady in "Freaks," but hotter. But this bird can't be tamed, see? So she busts free -- getting in a little dry hump against the bars of her cage on the way out -- and proceeds to shimmy and grind against a menagerie of male and female sexy beasts along the way, while telling you to "go to hell." Are you outraged yet?

While some of the commenters on E!, where the video premiered, were complimentary of Cyrus's new direction, others wasted no time in labeling her a "half naked ... Britney wannabe" and "another Disney chick gone horribly wrong."
