"Twilight," "The Muppets" are hits, but it's bad box office news for Hollywood -- and bland blockbuster formulas

It's way too early to make apocalyptic pronouncements about the death of movies -- not that that's likely to stop anyone -- but Hollywood observers were startled by the news that the weekend of Dec. 9-11 produced the lowest domestic box-office returns in more than three years. (In case you're wondering, the No. 1 movie on that dismal September 2008 weekend was "Bangkok Dangerous," with Nicolas Cage, and no, I didn't see it either.) There's already an official industry spin-control operation, best exemplified by an EW.com article which variously argues that A) things aren't as bad as they look; and B) this is the inevitable culmination of a downward trend, and hence is no big deal.

The new movie version of the classic western will star Johnny Depp as Tonto -- and cost $215 million. Why?

Apparently Disney has given "Rango" and "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski and his star, Johnny Depp, a greenlight to shoot a new feature film version of "The Lone Ranger," budgeted at $215 million. That might seem an exorbitant price tag for a concept that ran for years on TV in the 1950s, despite Ed Wood-level production values. But it's a reduced price compared to what Verbinski originally envisioned; Disney pulled the plug on the project a couple of months ago because its initial price tag, $250 million, was deemed too high.

Where is the money going, you ask? Well, originally it was going to pay for all the werewolves.

Yes, werewolves. The Lone Ranger and Tonto were going to fight werewolves.

A veteran producer sees not just success for Kristen Wiig's blockbuster, but signs of a lasting legacy

Last week, the summer's surprise blockbuster, "Bridesmaids," was released on DVD, after a spectacular run both in the United States and abroad. The fortunes of the film, which starred a brace of funny women and dealt equally in fart jokes and friendship, were regarded as crucial to the future of women in entertainment.

Hollywood, perpetually on the verge of never making another movie for anyone but teenage boys, was in need of a slap in the face, reminding it that women buy tickets, fill theaters, tell friends they loved it -- and know men who are occasionally eager to see the opposite sex portrayed compellingly on celluloid. "Bridesmaids" delivered a wallop, bringing in more than $280 million worldwide, and drawing an audience reported to be a third male, and largely over 30.

But has it actually whetted the film business's appetite for more female-driven projects? Salon called Lynda Obst, producer of movies like "Sleepless in Seattle," "Contact" and "How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days," the television show "Hot in Cleveland," the author of "Hello, He Lied" and all-around movie sage, to see what, if anything, has changed in her town this summer.

The Ryan Gosling thriller has great reviews but dreadful word of mouth. Salon writers discuss what went wrong

Thomas Rogers, Salon editor: So there seems to be an audience backlash against "Drive," a movie that you and a lot of other critics have been very fond of. It had decent opening weekend numbers (about $11 million, good for No. 3 on the charts), but the problem with the movie seems to be word of mouth: Basically, people hate it. It might have something to do with the fact that it's being advertised (at least on New York subway platforms) very ambiguously, with lots of glamorous photos of Ryan Gosling and Christina Hendricks, in a way that says very little about what the movie is about. People show up expecting a glossy sexy movie about a man driving a car, when in reality it's basically a hyper-violent European art-house movie that offers little in the way of car chases or romance. That's one way of thinking about it, but I honestly think the bigger problem is that this movie is too gut-churningly violent.

With DC/Warner Bros. in a race to the bottom with Marvel Studios, it's the audience that needs saving

This is what happens when you put studio executives in charge of making movies: Despite being a truly middling summer blockbuster (and doing pretty terrible in the international market), Warner Bros. studios is convinced that it can squeeze some money out of a "Green Lantern" sequel.

In fact, the studio's president Jeff Robinov -- not the screenwriters, and not director Martin Campbell, who may or may not be fired anyway -- has already promised us an "edgier," "darker" movie:

"To go forward we need to make it a little edgier and darker with more emphasis on action ... And we have to find a way to balance the time the movie spends in space versus on Earth."

I somehow doubt that the Earth-space ratio is what killed this movie. Perhaps Ryan Reynolds' face just doesn't translate well in foreign countries. Or maybe part of the issue can be found by looking at the huge push by DC Comics and Warner Bros. to remind their audiences who the Green Lantern is. (As long as you put it on a Subway cup, they will come.)

So this is happening:

Sam Raimi and original producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell (who also starred in the original franchise) are gearing up to remake their cult sensation THE EVIL DEAD through their long standing Ghost House Pictures partnership. Raimi and Tapert were such instant fans of Fede Alvarez’s short film "Panic Attack" that they set up a blind deal with the filmmaker and through that process have attached Fede Alvarez to write and direct the film. Alvarez wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. Academy Award® winning screenwriter Diablo Cody is currently doing revisions on the draft.

The three producing partners commented, "We are committed to making this movie and are inspired by the enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the 'Evil Dead' series. We can't wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available to us thirty years ago as well as Fede bringing a fresh eye to the film’s original elements."

A tale of an aging glam rock Nazi-hunter looks surprisingly touching

One time I met Sean Penn. It was outside an event for the Huffington Post 100 (I was not one of them ... surprised?) and he asked to bum a cigarette. I think I asked him something about Cuba? Anyway, this was the face he made the entire time we were talking. He did not look happy. I just had to face (ha?) facts: I'm no Scarlett Johansson. (Though I'm pretty sure he made that face hanging out with her too.)

So when people talk about how amazing Penn's performance is in "This Must Be the Place" -- where he plays an aging Robert Smith-type who decides to get all Roy Scheider in "Marathon Man" after his estranged father dies and goes on a cross-country trip to find his Nazi torturer -- I believe them. Sean Penn is a really good actor! He is even good when he has to pretend to be happy, like in "Milk" (first half) or "I Am Sam."

And unfortunately, this could mean trouble for Sam Raimi and James Franco's new star-studded project, "Oz, the Great and Powerful," according to a new ruling set by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

See, for a while now the characters in "The Wizard of Oz" have been considered public domain, which is why there are so many strange adaptations ("Return to Oz" being the most terrifying), since no one has to pay any royalties on the story. But the circuit is now clarifying that this doesn't include the iconic imagery that was created for the Judy Garland film:

When "Shaun of the Dead" came out in 2004, it was something of a revelation. While the horror-comedy idea had existed for decades, not since the "Scream" films did a movie play so deftly with its own genre conventions. The characters in Nick Frost and Simon Pegg's films already knew everything there was to know about zombies before the undead ever rose; they had seen the films, played the video games, and undoubtedly imagined -- like some of us tend to do -- what life would be like during the zombie apocalypse. And it was still scary as hell. (There's little doubt why "Scream 4" used a scene in which characters watched "Shaun of the Dead" while a friend was being murdered as a cue to the audience that these films all contained the same amount of cinephile self-awareness.)

June 12 marks three decades since the release of "Raiders of the Lost Ark." Here's how we're paying tribute

What are you doing this Sunday? The answer had better be "Watching 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' on continual repeat," or else we might have a problem. Thirty years ago this weekend, "Raiders" opened in theaters across the country, inspiring children worldwide to think of Harrison Ford as someone other than Han Solo. In honor of the momentous occasion (and the best film of the "Indiana Jones" franchise by far), we found Indy trivia, homages and cultural artifacts that will make your friends' faces melt off faster than Belloq's when he opened the ark.

     1. Alfred Molina's cinematic debut

That's right, the British thespian's first role wasn't as Doctor Otto Octavius in "Spider-Man 2" as so many people believe. A young Molina made his very first appearance on the big screen in 1981, playing Indy's treacherous sidekick in the opening sequence of "Raiders." Though he suffers a pretty bad fate in the film, nothing could prepare Molina for his next big American features, " White Fang 2: Myth of the White Wolf" and Mel Gibson's update of "Maverick."

As a mild-mannered serial murderer, Tom's son may have found the role he was born to play

To date, Colin Hanks has had only one role that allowed him to break free of the "nice guy" persona that Hollywood wants Tom's son to conform to. On "Mad Men," Colin's portrayal of Father Gill was the right amount of both sweet and creepy: his almost stalking-like interest in Elisabeth Moss' character -- combined with a desire to "save" her -- left me wondering if AMC planned to have a cliffhanger where Don Draper finds parts of Peggy buried behind a Queens church.

The reason Hanks was so good as Father Gill was that he didn't play the character the way his own father would have; he has that naive, almost-moony face, but he's missing the sharp, neurotic tongue and witty charm of Tom. He aways come across as nice, but in the way that Norman Bates was "nice." There's nothing remarkable about Colin Hanks at all (save Hollywood nepotism), which is why he should stick to the creepier, darker roles than the ones he finds in romantic comedies or buddy films; nobody will see him coming.

Did you know "The Human Centipede" is on Netflix's "Watch Instantly" list? Probably not, because who wants to remember that movie? The cultural conversation surrounding it seemed less about people actually seeing the Dutch torture-porn, and more about turning it into a symbol for everything that is wrong with movies today. The Emmys and "South Park" spoofed it, but beyond the basic premise – people being sewed together to make a human centipede (if you don't know, don't ask) – most of us shied away from learning anything beyond the vaguest details.

Roger Ebert gave it "no rating," which is different than zero stars, and commented, "I am required to award stars to movies I review.
Film's writer confirms previous comments; admits to loving challenges, J.R.R. Tolkien, candy

Last week, the sweet world of nostalgic board games got a little bit more bloody. Glenn Berger, one of the writers for the upcoming "Candy Land" film, told Entertainment Weekly to "envision it as Lord of the Rings, but set in a world of candy."

While my first reaction was to send that idea to Yikers Island for a life sentence, Berger's bold vision grew on me. Think of how many jokes there are to be made here! Lord Licorice bellowing from the Cupcake Commons, "NONE SHALL PASS ... UNTIL THEY PICK A PURPLE CARD FROM THE TOP OF THE PILE!" And that's just from the top of my head! I could think of so many more jokes by the time the film actually came out.

So anyone who thought Berger was going to try to backpedal from that grandiose claim was badly mistaken. If anything, the writer wants audiences to know how committed he is to doing a J.R.R. Tolkien thing for the Hasbro game. Also, how committed he is to candy:

Todd Phillips must be laughing all the way to the bank right now. Despite the nearly universal panning of "The Hangover Part II" (the film received a RottenTomatoes.com score of 35 percent), the sequel to the 2009 sleeper hit grossed more than $117 million at the box office this weekend, making it the most lucrative comedy ever made.

Now that's a scary thought for a piece of cinema that our own Andrew O'Hehir called a "dumb, ugly and, most of all, painfully unfunny movie" with a lot more " homophobia and xenophobia" than its original.
