A network that once professed a social conscience pushes its usual trash as a genuine youth movement grows

Back in August, MTV celebrated its 30th anniversary of marketing youth culture to advertisers under the guise of covering great music.

There is no golden age of MTV, although a new oral history called “I Want My MTV” at least argues that there were better times to watch -- namely, during its first 10 years. But if you were to identify the true height of the network’s influence, you might well point to the early 1990s. It wasn’t just the time of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” -- it was Rock the Vote, Choose or Lose, Boxers or Briefs. Presidential candidates needed to sit down with Tabitha Soren, and through town hall meetings, a youth agenda emerged during the 1992 campaign, just as Gen X graduated into the first Bush recession.

Even then, however, MTV really wanted to sell “influencers” to advertisers. In the New York Times business section and other places they didn't think their audience looked, MTV ran a picture of an alternaguy with cool clunky shoes and the tagline: "Buy this 24-year-old and get all his friends absolutely free."

Huh-huh, huh-huh. They made a comeback. But for MTV\'s cartoon delinquents, it might as well still be 1997

Huh-huh, huh-huh, huh-huh. Beavis and Butt-head are back. Did anyone really miss them, though? And can a resurrected version of the cartoon duo's series be anything but a bad idea?

Judging from tonight's premiere (MTV, 10 p.m./9 central) -- the first new "Beavis and Butt-head" episode since 1997 -- the answer to both questions is "no."

Watching a '90s pop culture-dependent show try to revive itself after 14 years is a weird and vaguely depressing experience, like revisiting your old high school as an adult and failing to feel nostalgic. For whatever reason, creator Mike Judge decided not to age his adolescent blockheads. They're still gawky, zit-faced teens, but instead of stumbling and blithering through Clinton-era suburbia and goofing almost exclusively on '80s and early '90s music videos, they live in 2011 suburbia and make fun of the new MTV staples, "Jersey Shore" and "True Life." (They make fun of music videos, too, but the jokes feel slightly off because they're watching them on MTV, which all but banished videos as a programming mainstay over a decade ago; for some reason it reminded me of seeing Don Rickles in concert in the late '90s and feeling sad when he joked about Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., then ended each bit with "God rest his soul.")

I love Massive Music Moments.

I live for those times when an album explodes throughout American society as more than a product -- but as a piece of art that speaks to our deepest longings and desires and anxieties. In these Moments, an album becomes so ubiquitous it seems to blast through the windows, to chase you down until it's impossible to ignore it. But you don't want to ignore it, because the songs are holding up a mirror and telling you who we are at that moment in history.

These sorts of Moments can't be denied. They leave an indelible imprint on the collective memory; when we look back at the year or the decade or the generation, there's no arguing that the album had a huge impact on us. It's pop music not just as private joy, but as a unifier, giving us something to share and bond over.

Actually, I should say I loved Massive Music Moments. They don't really happen anymore.

The singer spent the entire, star-studded MTV awards show appearing as "Jo Calderone"

Nobody has ever accused Lady Gaga of being boring. (This is, after all, the same performer who showed up to the Grammys earlier this year ensconced in a giant, translucent egg.) That being said, we're still not entirely sure what to make of Gaga's appearance at MTV's Video Music Awards last night. The pop star opened the show with a monologue and a rendition of her new single. What was remarkable about the performance was that she did it under the guise of her male alter ego, Jo Calderone.

And we weren't certain which was stranger -- the dangling umlaut in the title of the song Gaga performed ("Yoü and I") or that she continued to appear as the Calderone character for the rest of the evening

MTV's Video Music Awards will be held Aug. 28, and voting has officially opened to the public. Adele swept away with seven nominations (including best video), which makes sense as her album was the year's best-seller. But if we're going to be judging purely on the basis of the best video? We've provided the nominees and our picks below. Feel free to disagree vehemently.

    Best pop video nominees:

    Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"

NME heralds the launch of its new site with a (semi) definitive list of the best clips ever made

To launch of their new video site today, NME.com has made a list of their Top 100 music videos. In order.

You know that producing a definitive piece like this is every music nerd's biggest dream, and that he or she already has that list ready and waiting to go, so I just imagine the conference room of NME probably looked like a battlefield of broken bottle glasses and mangled EPs. How all the editors got together and finally found their 100 picks is beyond me, but you can't deny that their number one pick – Johnny Cash covering the Nine Inch Nail's "Hurt" – is a solid choice. It's not too fringe, it was the last song Cash filmed (and the one he made right after his wife died, though she appears in the video), and it's filled with some of the rawest emotion ever caught on tape from the Man in Black.

Update: MTV denies rumors of any shake-up

    [UPDATED BELOW]

I guess that Italy really did put a curse on the cast of "Jersey Shore." Not only have more than half the self-proclaimed Guidos been injured during the filming abroad, but now MTV is putting the kibosh on the kids after they finish up shooting the fifth season back in New Jersey.

To the rest of us, this tragicomic experiment has already gone on too long. Why do these poster children for bad ideas need another 13 episodes back on the shore once they've returned from their failed European vacation? Although the jury is still out on whether car accidents, fistfights and carpal tunnel syndrome count in the "con" column to MTV producers, the fact is that any real dramatic tension on the show is usually leaked months ahead of time by the paparazzi, and Italy has been relatively quiet on that front. Not a good sign about the narrative arc this season.

The singer shoots a suggested rapist in her latest -- but that doesn't mean it's glorifying murder

What will Rihanna do to top herself after this one? After exploring domestic violence in the video for "Love the Way You Lie" and kink in "S&M," the perpetually button-pushing singer finally went and killed a man. What's that sound? Oh, it must be the inevitable outrage.

The video, "Man Down," premiered on BET Tuesday night. It clearly takes inspiration from Gaspar Noe's unnerving "Irreversible," and begins with an act of violence. In an arresting, music-free prologue, Rihanna coolly waits in a bustling Kingston train station, raises her gun, and fires a fatal shot to the head of a man in the crowd. What unfolds next is the story of how she got there: carefree scenes of "yesterday morning," a nightclub flirtation that leads to an apparent sexual assault, and an eventual staggering act of retribution.

The 80s horror-comedy has a slick new look with Colin Farrell as a motorcycle-riding vamp. But does it miss the point?

When I was growing up, Tom Holland's "Fright Night" was one of the scariest movies I'd ever seen (along with "Return to Oz," which is a legit horror film and does not belong in the children's section). It was also one of the funniest, with Chris Sarandon as the suburban vampire-next-door, whose normalcy makes a perfect cover for his desire to eat people. Like Edward Herrmann in "Lost Boys," the vampire in "Fright Night" is a congenial neighbor who is attacked and destroyed after some punk kid discovers his secret. If only these guys looked like Edward Cullen instead of mid-life crisis vamps, maybe the whole narrative would be more sympathetic to them.

That might have been what the producers of the "Fright Night" remake had in mind when they cast smoking bad-boy Colin Farrell in the role of the bloodsucking neighbor Jerry instead of going with the original concept. Why hire a paunchy shmoe to play a vampire when he could be a gorgeous A-lister riding a motorcycle through an exploding garage?

The pop star attempts to create a Madonna-like controversy, but can't raise the Vatican's ire

A lot of people compare Madonna's work with Lady Gaga's, and in most cases the younger model has found ways to do it bigger, weirder and more disturbingly than her predecessor. But there is one place where Gaga can't hold a candle to Madonna, and that's pissing off the Catholic Church.

Back in 1989, Madonna's "Like a Prayer" managed to get the Vatican to release a statement condemning the video as blasphemous. Down the line, it was voted the most groundbreaking music video of all time. Lady Gaga was trying to cash in on some of that controversy with her new song "Judas," but ultimately the video was too confusing to upset anyone.

The narrative is pretty straightforward: Jesus is a Latin biker who goes clubbing with Mary Magdalene (Gaga). He and Judas get into a bar fight. It just doesn't have the same sacrilegious flavor of "Like a Prayer": In straight narrative terms it's more like one of those corny "updated" Bible stories you'd hear in Sunday school. Catholic League president Bill Donohue wouldn't even deign to call the video "anti-Catholic":

A new Mother's Day commercial for MTV shows Amber Portwood and company sharing their regret

The stars of MTV's "Teen Mom" have filmed a PSA about safe sex and how they wished they had waited. "I wish we would have cuddled" more than one of them says, in a commercial airing on the network for Mother's Day.

Well, hey, at least MTV is being more realistic than the abstinence-only message pushed by teen mom Bristol Palin.

It's strange, though. None of these moms – who are really only known to us because they are famous for having children at such a young age – say that they are happy with their decision. Of course that kind of message (Amber Portwood is glad she had a kid in high school!) wouldn't be likely to get very far, especially since MTV has positioned the show as more of a cautionary tale than a reality star haven. Plus, this is still a public service announcement after all, not a bad-idea machine.

The cast of "Jersey Shore" has been getting some push back from the residents of their fourth season locale. Not only are Italians protesting their arrival, claiming that the group embodies the worst stereotypes about their culture -- a claim that made a lot more sense when the state of New Jersey said it, since some of these kids aren't even Italian -- and restricting access for the show's filming.

In Florence, for example, mayor Matteo Renzi has delivered an ultimatum that is a little reminiscent of last week's "30 Rock" episode, "I Love Connecticut":

-- The cast will not be filmed in bars and clubs that serve alcohol.

-- The cast will not be filmed drinking in public.

-- The show will not be filmed to promote Florence as a drinking town.

Why "K-Town" can't find a home in the world of racially profiled reality shows

You know, we're always talking about how lowbrow American culture has become, but once in awhile we get a glimpse of a parallel world that shakes us to our core and makes us appreciate the little bit of intellect our society still holds dear. See, this other world is very much like our own, but somehow slightly worse; a place that could have been, or one day will be if we don't get our affairs in order like Scrooge did when he saw his headstone at the end of "A Christmas Carol."

I'm talking, of course, about the nonexistence of a show called "K-Town." K-town stands for Koreatown, a part of L.A. that has some producers trying to market it as the next "Jersey Shore." Except with Asian people! Because, hey, why should faux-Italians get to make money off of horribly racist stereotypes when there are eager 20-somethings of all different races who can prove to the world that no matter what your skin color, everybody in America has an equal right to be the worst.
