Ben Affleck's film seems well-poised for a big Oscar win

Even though Ben Affleck is not eligible to win best director in this year's Oscar race, his 1979 Iranian-hostage movie "Argo" seems poised to win big at the 85th Annual Academy Awards, making it a viable contender against other season favorites: "Zero Dark Thirty," "Lincoln," and "Silver Linings Playbook." So far, "Argo" has won two Golden Globes and this weekend won awards at two of the three major industry awards ceremonies, the Producers Guild Awards and the Screen Actor Guild Awards. The Directors Guild Awards takes place next week. Industry awards, along with the Golden Globes, are among the best predictors of the Oscar race.

Affleck, however, stayed modest. When asked about what the Oscar winners could be, Affleck said: "I don't do handicapping or try to divine what's going to happen down the road with movies." The 85h Annual Academy Awards will take place on Feb. 24, 2013.

A complete list of winners at Sunday's 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards:

MOVIES:

Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis, "Lincoln"

Actress: Jennifer Lawrence, "Silver Linings Playbook"

Supporting actor: Tommy Lee Jones, "Lincoln"

Supporting actress: Anne Hathaway, "Les Miserables"

Cast: "Argo"

Stunt ensemble: "Skyfall"

---

Ben Affleck continues to rack up awards despite Oscar snub

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The CIA thriller "Argo" continues to steamroll through awards season, winning the top honor for overall cast performance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

SAG's lead-acting honors Sunday went to Jennifer Lawrence for her role as a troubled widow in a shaky new relationship in the lost-souls romance "Silver Linings Playbook" and Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln in the Civil War epic "Lincoln."

Anne Hathaway of "Les Miserables" and Tommy Lee Jones of "Lincoln" won the supporting-acting honors.

"It occurred to me — it was an actor that murdered Abraham Lincoln," said Day-Lewis, a solid front-runner to join an exclusive list of three-time acting Oscar winners. "And therefore, somehow it is only so fitting that every now and then an actor tries to bring him back to life again."

It was a brisk, businesslike and fairly bland evening as the actors union handed out honors to a predictable lineup of winners who generally had triumphed at earlier Hollywood ceremonies or past SAG shows.

The SAG cast win came a day after "Argo" claimed the top honor from the Producers Guild of America, whose winner often goes on to claim best picture at the Academy Awards. "Argo" also was a surprise victor two weeks ago at the Golden Globes, where it won best drama and director for Ben Affleck.

The acclaimed drama is out of contention — but that's just the rules

"Beasts of the Southern Wild" — an innovative, imaginative and deeply moving drama with some of the most natural and affecting performances to come along in years — is easily one of the best films of the year. So the announcement, on Monday, that it would be ineligible for the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards came as a complete surprise. As the Hollywood Reporter revealed, director Benh Zeitlin's $1.3 million budget Gulf Coast tale of a little girl and her father relied on a local cast of unknown, non-professional actors — including the ferociously brilliant Quvenzhané Wallis — who are not SAG members. And so, despite winning Sundance's Grand Jury Prize and Cannes' Caméra d'Or, and being poised to be a shoo-in at the Academy Awards and Golden Globes at nomination time, the film will not be eligible for individual or ensemble SAG Awards.
