Tribeca Film Festival: The 10 hottest movies

Born a dozen years ago in the wake of a major tragedy, the Tribeca Film Festival finds its opening week this year tinged with trauma as well. Yes, the show will go on, with the glitz and the headlines more than a little subdued by the painful news from Boston – but what kind of show is it? Tribeca is now established as a cornerstone event of New York’s spring cultural season, but still lacks a clear role in the movie world’s ecology. It’s not a major market festival where films are bought and sold, in the vein of Cannes or Sundance, it’s not a Hollywood/Indiewood showcase, like Toronto, and it’s not a celebration of DIY or low-budget ingenuity, like South by Southwest. In part, Tribeca has always been a hometown festival for the Manhattan-centric indie film world, but that’s no longer the same hot concept it was in 2001, when Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff announced a new film festival aimed at getting downtown Manhattan back on its feet in the wake of 9/11.

In wake of the tragedy that continues to unfold in Boston, media outlets and newspapers have turned their attention to the two explosions at the Boston Marathon finish line.

Aside from the gruesome photographs, the most stiking detail about headlines is the casualty count -- some papers record 100 injured; others, up to 140. As details emerge and officials continue to investigate, this number is likely to increase in coming days.

Update: The injury count as of 11 ET this morning is three dead and 176 injured.

Two blasts at the Boston Marathon finish line have left at least 2 dead, about 2 dozen injured, and thousands shaken while police investigate the source of the bombs.

Witnesses on the scene described the explosion sound as a canon going off, and though details are still emerging, photos of the gruesome scene have begun to pour in via social media and news outlets. First as tragedy, then as farce. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) announced Tuesday details of how much money the banks will pay homeowners who were found to be wrongfully foreclosed on, or who suffered financial harm at the hands of the banks. Just as a sampling, individuals who had loan modifications approved by banks but were still foreclosed upon will receive a paltry $300. Six hundred seventy-nine people were faced with foreclosure even though they were never once in default; they will be compensated $5,000.

Former Wall Street V.P. and current Occupy Wall Street activist and member of Strike Debt Alexis Goldstein took it upon herself Tuesday to put the payouts in a little context. She created a site detailing "What You Can Buy for Having Your House Stolen," on which she lists a varied taxonomy of items the compensation can afford wrongfully foreclosed individuals -- all the items that are not your house back. Goldstein told Salon via email, "I'm hoping to (1) draw attention to the OCC, one of the lesser-known banking regulators who are completely captured by the banks. (2) point out how egregiously low these settlement numbers are."

Mean Mad Men Tumblr shows that admen are all mean girls at heart

The Internet loves a good Tumblr mashup. Taylor Pearce has delivered us another one, pairing quotes from the Tina Fey movie "Mean Girls" with a show that has almost nothing similar, "Mad Men."

Pearce explains on the Burn Book of the Tumblr, Mean Mad Men:

After seeing Mean Girls, Girl World was forever changed: consoling someone when they were sick was replaced with “boo you whore,” fabulous was switched with “fetch,” and girls grabbed their boobs when there was a “30% chance it’s already raining.”

Then AMC decided to grace the earth with Mad Men and suddenly I found myself wondering WWJD- “What would Joan do?,” questioning if it’s ever too early to drink if you’re on Roger time, and daydreaming about whether I would have caught Don’s wandering eye.

In the end, if you’ve ever quoted Mean Girls, or cried during Mad Men*, you’re in the right place.

“One Night” with fun. at Radio City Music Hall

Daniel Silbert has been photographing New York band fun. for years, capturing their rise to stardom. The band, composed of Nate Reuss, Andrew Dost and Jack Antonoff, won a Grammy for best new artist of 2012. A week before the awards ceremony, fun. performed to a sold-out audience at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

Silbert, who was backstage with the performers, documented the night in a photo exhibition titled "One Night," now on display at Rivington Design House Gallery until April 29. Below are photos from his collection:
