The reality show "So You Think You Can Dance" offers a fascinating blend of high and low culture

The Fox network is known for its thought-provoking television programming, so it was no surprise, last month, to flip the channel there and find a group of six bare-chested men wearing skirts, writhing and leaping in a frankly eroticized war dance, as they performed choreographer Robert Battle’s The Hunt.

Or, wait. Perhaps you were surprised? These members of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater appeared on Fox’s hit reality program So You Think You Can Dance, which wraps up its ninth season tonight. Viewers enjoyed the Ailey performance while waiting to find out which dancers would be, in reality-speak, “eliminated.” As if to make up for the daring of the professional troupe’s performance, the results were blandly predictable: two white girls (who are nearly indistinguishable from two other white girls currently on the show) got to stay; one lithe black ballerina named Amber was voted off. Thanks for nothing, America.

SPOILER! Americans picks their favorite dancer...and it's not who you think

Thank you baby Jesus!

I love being wrong sometimes. I was convinced, watching the girls get picked off systematically from week one of "So You Think You Can Dance," that the speed-dialing-teen-girl contingent of the voting public was fixated on the guys and wouldn't elevate their fellow XXers to the status of "America's favorite dancer." And then little Lauren Froderman reached out and touched them, and now we have the third female champion in seven seasons. Hallelujah.

And don't kid yourself -- it's a shocker. Yes, Lauren was infinitely more versatile than Kent (and my dear Robert.) She has proven herself to be bubbly and sweet, but not fake. All season she managed to be sexy, vulnerable, dark, or innocent, whenever she needed to be. But Kent was the clear favorite, for weeks, from the moment Alex Wong broke himself. The adoration, the screaming audience, the fact that he was never, not once, in danger of going home. It was his to lose. Again, I love being wrong.

Lauren, Kent and Robert prove their worth -- and we learn that "Hip to be Square" is unsuitable for dancing

I don't know what I was expecting for the last round of performances on "So You Think You Can Dance" this week -- we've seen Robert, Kent and Lauren perform every kind of dance style imaginable in every possible partnership, and all three have earned the praise heaped upon them and the affection we feel for them. This is the first time in a long time, maybe ever, that I've felt all the finalists on "SYTYCD" deserve it. Sort of.

Because here's the deal: Kent might be the most popular, and the almost-certain winner, but he's not the best. He's sweet and cute, with the aw-shucks charm and the Paul Newman-y looks. He's an excellent dancer, with lovely technique most of the time (minus disco and ballroom) and he's enthusiastic, committed and earnest. Kent's performance with All Star Allison was the most deeply felt on his part since the prom piece with Lauren, but it looked like he managed to scratch the surface of something truly raw in his gut and it scared him. He pulled back from it, when I wanted him to just give in. The Bollywood was fine, although the smiley face distracted me from the already distracting sparkly costumes. The guy-on-guy malevos routine that closed the show was interesting for its novelty, but Kent looked like an 8-year-old in Daddy's suit and was no match for the more masculine Robert.

America makes the right choice and eliminates the weakest link

Minus the wonderful Alex Wong and the hard-to-relate-to Billy Bell, the three finalists destined for next week's "SYTYCD" finale are the best dancers of the bunch. Fate batted the dancers around this season like my cat's smelly stuffed mouse and now we get to watch Lauren, Kent, and Robert compete for the title. It feels good. Adechike seemed to know from the get-go that he was done for -- his solo was terse, his body and personality completely closed off, and when he was eliminated at the end there was nothing on his face. Grateful words came out of his mouth, but nothing about his vibe synced with them. If Desmond Richardson is Adechike's idol, then he's got some work to do -- watching Richardson dance to "Sympathy for the Devil" was like seeing God. To execute choreography that expresses such internal chaos by having minute control over every muscle ... woo, boy.

We get icky clowns, lace body stockings, and slightly homoerotic contemporary a week before the big finale

There was a lot to love about "So You Think You Can Dance" Wednesday night. Multiple memorable routines, some incredibly concise observations from the judges, and a little glimpse into each of the final four dancers' lives that gave us new information and drew us a little bit closer to them. Of course, one of these sweet kids is out of here this week, so really I'm just a sucker and probably won't be happy with the results Thursday night.

I really want Robert to win, and I don't think he will. His warmth and authenticity is evident in everything he does. All of the final dancers are pleasant and earnest and seemingly kind in their recorded packages and rehearsal footage, but Robert has been able to infuse all of his performances with the same commitment and clarity he brings to the rest of his existence. Hyperbolic? Yup. And I don't care. Lauren, too, has been fully engaged in everything she's done, except for the first couple of weeks when she hadn't quite figured out how to dance like a grown-up. I have this little voice in my head, however, that even though Robert and Lauren are both better dancers (more fluid, more versatile, more consistent) than Adechike, one of them may miss out on next week's finale and the chance to be "America's favorite dancer." Kent, even before his rapturous contemporary, is the clear favorite and in no danger whatsoever, unless Taylor Lautner simultaneously appears, naked, in hundreds of thousands of teen girls' houses to distract them during the voting period.

We finally get to see all of the dancers perform, with nary an injury in sight. Minus Billy's knee brace

Two people are going home this week on "So You Think You Can Dance," and I have a sneaking suspicion that my least favorite dancers aren't the same as America's, so ... I'm prepared to be annoyed. After Billy's performance night I would be thrilled if he stayed in the competition, but I don't know that he can muster the votes over Adechike. It's going to take divine intervention to keep Jose on the show, though.

I'm technically on vacation right now, so we're keeping this very, very short (for me.) And I'm sure hearts are breaking as I tell you that I will not be writing a reaction to the elimination Thursday night -- we'll have to commiserate or lament our lost (blank) and (blank) next week.

Lauren: Our resident "lady-dancer," according to Adam, was upbeat and fresh in her Broadway routine with Allison. I was thrilled to finally see two girls perform together, and guest judge Toni Redpath was right -- strong women are sexy. Women don't cease to be hot when the guy leaves the room. Then Lauren made her body undulate freakishly during her foxtrot with the overdressed Adechike (seriously, a sweater vest? Lauren's practically wearing a bathing suit.) She's still great, and getting better.

Cat Deeley on live television: "We just make this show up as we go along"

I hate it when reality programs pull the "no elimination" thing -- it feels like I was cheated out of the entire previous hour. But what I did appreciate about the last-minute twist Thursday night on "So You Think You Can Dance" -- no one goes home, then Billy competes next week, and two go home after that -- was the genuine shock and awe coming from the dancers and the audience. Even Cat was surprised by the judges' decision, laughingly confirming what we already knew: "We just make this show up as we go along." She's hard to rattle, too, so when it does happen we get to watch her blush a little and giggle nervously.

It's a great night for hip-hop, an even better night for Kent -- and Billy Bell is the latest to get maimed

At this point I refuse to dignify yet another injury, this time to Billy Bell and his bendy knee, with more of a response than this: what the hell?

It was the 150th episode of "So You Think You Can Dance" on Wednesday, but beyond guest judge and director-choreographer Kenny Ortega ("High School Musical" and its sequels, "This Is It") there weren't any extra bells and whistles. Unless you count that tacked-on shower curtain Cat was wearing or the semi-sheer club shirt Adam was rocking. There were some surprises, sure, but the competition is getting more and more noose-like every week and the judges are going to be merciless in their cuts on Thursday nights. It doesn't pay to get overly emotional about the performers any more.

Which is good, because I didn't experience a lot of swooning tingly feelings after the performances on Wednesday. No real chills, although a couple of routines did make me bob my upper body on the couch, as if I were physically capable of matching the dancers step-by-step. That's always a good (if laughable and kind of sad) sign of an above-average performance.

We get the bait-and-switch from producers; and Billy gets really lucky

I'm actually really irritated right now. I knew something was up on "So You Think Can Dance" when we saw neither hide nor hair of Ashley until the last two minutes of the show. We didn't see her during performances, hardly a word was mentioned of her before the final elimination, and, like some commenters pointed out last week with Alex's big news, neither of the other at-risk dancers looked worried, because they already knew what was going to happen (but Billy, I think you're toast next week).

So Ashley Galvan from Visalia, California (holla!) was eliminated from the competition for a rib injury that will lay her up for 3-5 weeks. Her silver lining is that she's going on the live tour, but in the meantime season 7 of the show is proving to be the most death-defying yet. Maybe next time the dancers can have the decency to split something open, during the live performance show, preferably with some gore. That way I'll know it's not just the producers screwing with us.

Another week, another injury: Ashley sits out while the men dominate the stage

I was deathly afraid some of the spark would be gone on "So You Think You Can Dance" now that Alex Wong isn't electrifying the judges (and us). But I had a lot more fun watching the performances this week than I ever expected, so that's a great big "phew" from the peanut gallery, and I'll eventually learn to trust the producers. Maybe.

But what are they doing to the performers down there in L.A.? Ashley was injured during rehearsal this week, and therefore absent Wednesday night, but I'm optimistic that her ribs will be well and healed (enough) for her to perform next time and avoid automatic elimination. As for who will join her in the bottom three: I think Billy's in trouble, again, I still think Adéchiké's bulletproof, and Robert may have been able to win over some converts, so ... Jose? Lauren, just because she's a girl and Kent kissed her last week on stage with out any orders to do so? Who knows. She was the only one repping the estrogen set this week, and she still has a lot to offer.

The best dancer in the competition is going home, done in by a lacerated Achilles' tendon

I know it's just a show. The dancers are real people, sure, but it's just a show, and my (our) connection to them is strictly one-sided. We make it real by voting for them, forcing that gossamer bond with people who couldn't pick us out on the street, but "So You Think You Can Dance" is, at the end of the day, entertainment., and we are the emotionally manipulated.

But I still cried my face off when I found out that Alex Wong, "The Beast," the sweetly humble powerhouse with the inhuman ability, had a lacerated Achilles' tendon that was ending his skyward trajectory on the show. Like, I had to take my glasses off, because they fogged up with my bitter tears. The judges were crying, Cat was crying and every single dancer was in the ugly-crying place. Even Ashley and Billy, the other performers up for elimination this week, didn't seem to register one iota of relief at their reprieve, so upset were they about Alex. The funny part is: we don't know, for sure, that Wong would've won the whole kit and kaboodle, but it would've taken him spewing Mel Gibson-esque racist tirades on live television to lose. So now the other performers are dancing for second place. Woe are the next season's contestants, because the minute Alex Wong is back on the show (and he will be, without all the silly auditioning, I hope) those other guys are going to have to set themselves on fire to get votes. So, to our beloved "Beast": fix the Achilles', get your sweet ass to physical therapy, and come back to us, lickety split.

A potentially devastating injury sidelines the front-runner, and everyone else tries their best

Jesus.

I was so anticipating Alex Wong's performances Wednesday night after seeing him kill it last week with Twitch -- then my stomach dropped. He wasn't in the show opener, and I know what that means on "So You Think You Can Dance." It means an injury. To hear from Nigel that it might not be just a torn muscle, or a sprain, which dancers of Alex's caliber dance through every day, but that it could be a ruptered Achilles' ... well, I almost stopped watching and called in sick for today. The rules state that if Alex can't perform for two weeks he'll be eliminated, and while it's fair, in this case it would be a f#*king travesty. He's the best dancer on the stage, and I think anyone who wins in his stead will know in his or her soul that the victory is tainted. And that's not fair. Everyone should be crossing their fingers and their toes and their eyes that he can rub some dirt on it and jump back in.

UPDATED: An overdue elimination, and the producers decide to change up the format. Again

Last week I went on and on about Melinda being given a pass during elimination over the super-charming ballroom dancer Cristina. I stand by that. But for Melinda to be told, to her face, "we made a mistake letting Cristina go" after she successfully unhooked her ridiculous dress mid-step and shook her little Colombian (really?) ass off, well, that's a bit nastier than I usually like to see on "So You Think You Can Dance." It felt like Mia Michaels just couldn't stop herself from saying it, and she should have, no matter how true it was. Half the bad in Melinda's salsa routine was the sexy-but-compact Pasha and his inability to lift a girl who's over 5'3". She was indeed the worst of the night, and I don't think it's a stretch to say she's going home (for real) this week, but she earned her spot on the show and deserved more respect than that.

UPDATED: The first idiotic elimination of the season, and this "heart form" takes a turn for the "huh?"

Eh. Shrug.

That's kind of where I am after tonight's "So You Think You Can Dance" performances. I can usually count on at least 30 percent of the numbers on any given "SYTYCD" show to thrill me in some way, whether it's nasty, on-point hip-hop or tear-inducing contemporary. I've even been known to shiver after an arousing paso doble (yes, I love the much-derided paso, give me that over a smooth waltz any time.) With a couple of notable exceptions, nary a hair on my arm stood up after Wednesday night.

I also disagreed with almost every single thing the judges said. From Mia asserting that she was wearing a "bedspread" (it was really more like a rat had stuck its nest to her front) to the notion that Robert wasn't in control of Anya during their Argentinean tango, this was one of those weeks that the professional dancers and the professional TV watcher (that's a thing!) weren't on the same page.

UPDATED with results from the first elimination show! Competition really begins, and Alex Wong makes me cry

Here it is, ladies and gentleman, the first competition show of "So You Think You Can Dance," season 7! This is when choreographer, dance style, technique, and show-person-ship must fuse into one divine expression. Sometimes it's transcendent (Alex Wong, I'm talking to you!) and sometimes it's flat, like year-old Keystone Light (sorry, Melinda). I'll say right off the top that I was glad to only have to focus on one dancer per routine, a direct result of the "All-Stars" format this year. Yes, yes, yes, I'm a convert. Naysayer to yay-sayer.

The judges spent a lot of time Wednesday night talking about what happens "in between the steps," the little extra bit of oomph and emotion and movement-without-moving that the most successful performers infuse into each number. I see it as the difference between a chorus member and a Broadway star, or a character actor and a lead. Because it is, really, the ability to act that makes certain dancers haunt you later. They make you believe that they are someone's naughty office daydream (thank you, Kathryn, for being so exquisite I never saw AdéChiké.)

Getting to know the 11 finalists means a return to the sparkly, spangly, sometimes twisted dancing we love

I am so glad I waited to write about this week's "So You Think You Can Dance." I was hemming and hawing over writing two recaps, ignoring the rest of Vegas week, doing an intimate dissection of the (now) Top 11, calling my family in Visalia to see if they know this Ashley Galvan girl and if they might lightly stalk her family and pry them with questions ... you know, I was doing writer-y stuff. After the Wednesday night show, with the sometimes painful reveals of the finalists (Anthony Burrell? No?), I felt like I had a good grasp of the backstory of each dancer from the manufactured hearth-and-home interludes. I was ready to get to the actual, you know, dancing. I wanted the "SYTYCD" meat. The goods. The talent portion of our program. And that was Thursday in a nutshell. The dancers got to celebrate their art form and celebrate their wins. They made it to the show, and they were soaking in it. No fickle Americans voting with their tween-age thumbs, no serious criticism from the judges, no hair-pulling competition, just straight up showing off. How cool is that?

I have, over the course of six seasons, come to expect certain things from “So You Think You Can Dance.” There are shiny tropes that announce their presence with an acoustic emo riff swelling in the background: the sob stories of strife and hardship that make Cat cry, the kitten-cute 18-year-olds from small towns who bring their moms, the contemporary prodigies that make the judges drool on themselves, and the underdogs who are too big or too old. There’s always the hip-hop dancer who shocks the judges with his immediate ability to cha cha. Even the terrible people fit into a couple of categories: the alter ego freaks who have got to know they aren’t going to get through 20 seconds of their crap electronica music before the judges shut them down, and the deluded fringe-dwellers who think they’ve got a shot because they don’t own a television and have never seen the show. They’ve never seen anyone dance, as far as I can tell, even on "Solid Gold."

Welcome back to a show that matured from low-rated filler to a visual encyclopedia of an art form. Now, minus Mary

Now that the national nightmare called "American Idol" is over and the country is busy forgetting who Lee DeWyze is, I suggest we turn our attention to a far worthier contest, in which people push their bodies to the limit, tight outfits still abound, and the judges actually give constructive criticism (except for Nigel). "So You Think You Can Dance" is back, signaling the start of summer and my descent into wish-fulfillment-land, where I'm coordinated, talented and graceful. There are a lot of changes afoot for "SYTYCD's" seventh season, after an ill-advised fall season in 2009, which got lost in the crush of every other season premiere on the planet and felt overexposed anyway, with the live tour being promoted and season 5 winner Jeanine Mason still freshly minted.

But we're back on track! Mary Murphy, of the interminable scream from hell, is being replaced by Mia Michaels -- a significant improvement that means the dancers are going to get invaluable insight into their craft if they can decipher her esoteric tangents. Director and choreographer Adam Shankman is returning as well, bringing levity and L.A. sheen. I love it when a dancer moves him to tears, because even with his super-tan I can tell it's genuine, that he can't control it. And then there's Executive Producer Nigel Lythgoe, who's the same as ever: a perfectly honest pervert.
