As the comedian holds a South Carolina rally with Herman Cain, an expert unravels what's real and what's satire

Later today, Stephen Colbert will host a rally with Herman Cain in South Carolina. It's part of his increasingly complicated involvement in his home state's GOP primary. Colbert wants voters to back Cain as a way of supporting Colbert's run for "president of the United States of South Carolina." Write-in candidates aren't allowed, hence the partnership with the one-time GOP front-runner, who qualified for the ballot before dropping out of the race amid controversy.

Who's kidding who? Is the joke on Cain? On South Carolina voters? Or is Colbert not joking at all? His super PAC, Americans for a Better Tomorow, Tomorrow -- technically now in the capable hands of his colleague Jon Stewart -- has run a number of joke ads on TV. (One involves a lengthy attack on Colbert himself: "America is in crisis, and Stephen Colbert is turning our election into a circus. ... Why is the 't'' in his name silent? What else is he silent about? Letting murderers out of jail?") But Colbert and Stewart also spent a significant segment of Tuesday night's "Daily Show" explaining the dos and don'ts of super PAC coordination -- a satirical cover for discussion of an undeniably serious subject.

Do these look like the faces of people who've just violated campaign finance rules?

The grand experiment launched late last week continues: Stephen Colbert is exploring a run for president, while Jon Stewart manages Colbert's former super PAC -- and enthusiastically smears the candidate's would-be Republican primary rivals in the process. The problem with managing a PAC in support of your business partner's campaign, however, is that not a whole lot of it feels legal. (Even if it almost certainly is.) That's why Stewart and Colbert powwowed with their lawyer on "The Daily Show" last night -- just to make sure their "good"-faith efforts at non-coordination were still strictly within the bounds of the law.

The Federal Election Commission said Thursday that comedian Stephen Colbert can use his TV show's resources to boost his political action committee, but he must disclose some major expenses as in-kind contributions from the show's corporate owners.

Colbert played it straight during his appearance before the commission, letting his attorney do most of the talking while saving his trademark quips for a crowd that gathered outside the commission building after the meeting.

"I don't accept the status quo," he told the crowd, brandishing a portable credit card processing machine. "I do accept Visa, Mastercard or American Express."

Many in the crowd handed Colbert their credit cards or dollar bills as contributions.

Asked what point he was trying to make about corporate America, Colbert did not miss a beat.

"None," he quipped. "I want their money."

Colbert, who plays a conservative TV pundit on "The Colbert Report," is forming Colbert Super PAC, a type of political action committee which will allow him to raise unlimited amounts of money from corporations, unions and individuals. The money will be used to support or oppose candidates in the 2012 elections through independent expenditures such as TV ads.

(The photo was then tweeted by one of the show's presenters, and has since circulated widely.)

This subject was taken up last night by Stephen Colbert, who likewise seemed skeptical of Breitbart's excuse (the commentator insists he wasn't aware there were video cameras operating in the studio when he passed the photo around).

Earlier this week, Newt Gingrich's press secretary, Rick Tyler, sent the following message to the Huffington Post, in an attempt to do some serious PR firefighting for his candidate:

The literati sent out their minions to do their bidding. Washington cannot tolerate threats from outsiders who might disrupt their comfortable world. The firefight started when the cowardly sensed weakness. They fired timidly at first, then the sheep not wanting to be dropped from the establishment’s cocktail party invite list unloaded their entire clip, firing without taking aim their distortions and falsehoods. Now they are left exposed by their bylines and handles. But surely they had killed him off. This is the way it always worked. A lesser person could not have survived the first few minutes of the onslaught. But out of the billowing smoke and dust of tweets and trivia emerged Gingrich, once again ready to lead those who won’t be intimated by the political elite and are ready to take on the challenges America faces.

You may recall that last week, Arizona Senator Jon Kyl claimed that "well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does" was abortions. This turned out to be incredibly false. So, the Kyl camp backpedaled, saying that the senator's remarks were not intended as "factual statements" -- which was both absurd, and fodder for mockery. Enter Stephen Colbert.

With a cast including Patti Lupone and Stephen Colbert, we still wonder if the Sondheim production can be updated

This must be the year the live concerts realized they could make way more money if they started filming their productions. We've seen the Arcade Fire, Duran Duran and the National all take part in a new media collaboration with famous directors to have their shows live-streamed on the Internet. And now Broadway's starting to come around as well, which ostensibly should allow them to ease up on their harsh bootlegging policy. (I'm still mad about getting kicked out of "Phantom of the Opera" because I brought in a recorder during a school field trip.)

Stephen Sondheim's "Company" will be getting the cinematic treatment this April, when the New York Philharmonic's version of the show will be taped for a June film release. Usually I'd wonder who would go pay $11 to sit in a movie theater and watch a play, but the lineup of "Company" is so good, it might as well be a blockbuster. Not only is Neil Patrick Harris -- that superstar of every medium -- playing the happy bachelor Bobby, but he'll be hamming it up with Patti LuPone, one of the biggest names on Broadway.

Stephen Colbert is famously, unabashedly patriotic. From the bald eagle that flies across the screen in his show's opening to the many, sometimes belabored ways he tries to dig through political rhetoric for the American Dream. With the next batch of new episodes stalled until next week, the Colbert Report producers chose to create a series of mash-up videos that celebrate the U.S. Constitution and Stephen's many segments devoted to these basic American rights.

What better to start with than the First Amendment? Stephen's particularly interested in freedom of speech through arson:

And a novel solution from Stephen Colbert: "Let the rich start their own country"

The March/April issue of Mother Jones magazine has a fascinating account of the growing income gap and staggering economic inequality in America. Bolstered by a selection of illuminating infographics, MJ writer Kevin Drum paints a bleak picture of opportunity in the U.S.:

Income inequality has grown dramatically since the mid-'70s—far more in the US than in most advanced countries—and the gap is only partly related to college grads outperforming high-school grads. Rather, the bulk of our growing inequality has been a product of skyrocketing incomes among the richest 1 percent and—even more dramatically—among the top 0.1 percent. It has, in other words, been CEOs and Wall Street traders at the very tippy-top who are hoovering up vast sums of money from everyone, even those who by ordinary standards are pretty well off.

Colbert blamed the intrusion on the hacker collective Anonymous, a shadowy organization that also targeted Americans for Prosperity, the political action group headed by the Koch brothers.
