Katherine Russell has been cooperating with the FBI since her husband's death

The female DNA and fingerprints found on a piece of one of the Boston marathon explosives does not match those of Katherine Russell, the 24-year-old widow of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. Russell had been under suspicion following the discovery of female DNA, but her lawyers insist she had "no inkling" of the marathon plot and she has reportedly been cooperating with the FBI. However, John Miller, a former assistant FBI director, told "CBS This Morning" that the woman remains central to the ongoing investigation:

What continues to puzzle the FBI about Russell is what she knew and when, if anything, Miller said. "What they really want to know from her is, you know, here's a woman who dated Tamerlan, who converted to Islam after they were married, who ... lived in the same apartment -- not a big apartment -- where bombs were being constructed and pressure cookers were being bought two or three at a time," Miller said. "They want to know, 'Is it possible all of this was going on concealed from you, or did you know it the whole time?'"

BOSTON -- The brothers suspected in the bombing of the Boston Marathon initially envisioned themselves as suicide bombers who would strike on the Fourth of July, according to a new report.

Two law enforcement officials told The New York Times that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, who survives, admitted the plans two days after he was captured in a suburban Boston backyard on April 19.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev also confessed that he and his older brother had watched online sermons of radical American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki before carrying out the attacks, according to the Times sources.

The Tsarnaev brothers moved up the date of the attack to April 15, Patriot Day in Boston, when they finished making their pressure-cooker bombs ahead of schedule, according to the officials. The paper said the bombs were assembled in the Cambridge, Mass., apartment of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed in a shootout with police.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev's body had lain unclaimed, but Boston Department of Public Safety spokesman Terrel Harris said a funeral home retained by the 26-year-old's family picked up the remains Thursday afternoon.

He said he had no more information about plans for the remains.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev's wife, Katherine Russell, has agreed to release it

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Relatives of the dead suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing will claim his body now that his wife has agreed to release it, an uncle said as officials in both Washington and Russia deepened their investigations into him and his ties.

The body of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, has been at the medical examiner's office in Massachusetts since he died after a gunfight with authorities more than a week ago.

Amato DeLuca, the Rhode Island attorney for his widow, Katherine Russell, said Tuesday that his client had just learned that the medical examiner was ready to release Tsarnaev's body and that she wants it released to his side of the family.

Police said Tsarnaev ran out of ammunition before his brother, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, dragged his body under a vehicle while fleeing the scene. His cause of death has been determined but will not be made public until his remains are claimed.

"Of course, family members will take possession of the body," uncle Ruslan Tsarni of Maryland told The Associated Press on Tuesday night. "We'll do it. We will do it. A family is a family."

He would not elaborate. Tsarnaev's parents are still in Russia, but he has other relatives on his side of the family in the U.S., including Tsarni.

We may find the Tsarnaevs' ideology deluded, but we should take it seriously if we want to avoid others like them

Why do we Americans find it so important to believe that terrorists and assassins in the U.S. can be dismissed as mere emotionally disturbed maniacs, rather than viewed as revolutionaries in the thrall of militant political or religious ideologies? Why are so we intent in removing the political from political violence?

These questions are timely, following Vice President Joe Biden’s dismissive description of the Boston Marathon bombers as “knockoff jihadis.” Mere amateurs, these brothers, who were capable of murdering several marathon participants, maiming scores more and shutting down a major city and even rail lines for hours or days. The real amateurism, it might be suggested, is that of the pundits and journalists trying to psychoanalyze the Tsarnaev brothers and their relations from a distance.

But there are already reports that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving killer, has said that he and his brother acted in response to the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan — wars that they considered to be attacks on Islam. What if this really was the motive? What if these brothers really were sincere Islamist revolutionaries, like the thousands of others who have rallied to militant jihadism in the past several decades, whether they were connected to international Islamist networks or acting on their own? That doesn’t exonerate their brutal crimes in any way. But surely Islamist terrorists are best understood in terms of the common Islamist ideology they share, rather than personal or familial experiences that are unique to each.

Updated, 11:42 a.m. EST: In attempts to further flesh out a picture of the Tsarnaevs, investigators have reportedly discovered that the elder brother, Tamerlan, killed in a police shootout, may have had links to two now-dead militants in Russia. Via New York Magazine:

According to the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, Tsarnaev may have been linked to William Plotnikov, a Canadian "boxer-turned-jihadist" (sounds familiar) who died at the hands of Russian forces in the republic of Dagestan last year, while Tsarnaev was visiting...Tsarnaev may have also known, or chatted online, with Makhmud Mansur Nidal, an 18-year-old militant who was reportedly "under surveillance for six months as a suspected recruiter for Islamist insurgents fighting Moscow's rule in the region." Nidal was also killed in Russia, in May 2012 during Tamerlan's six-month visit

Zubeidat Tsarnaeva also cited conspiracy theories about 9/11 being a plot against Muslims

BOSTON (AP) — In photos of her as a younger woman, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva wears a low-cut blouse and has her hair teased like a 1980s rock star. After she arrived in the U.S. from Russia in 2002, she went to beauty school and did facials at a suburban day spa.

But in recent years, people noticed a change. She began wearing a hijab and cited conspiracy theories about 9/11 being a plot against Muslims.

Now known as the angry and grieving mother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects, Tsarnaeva is drawing increased attention after federal officials say Russian authorities intercepted her phone calls, including one in which she vaguely discussed jihad with her elder son. In another, she was recorded talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, U.S. officials said.

Tsarnaeva insists there is no mystery. She's no terrorist, just someone who found a deeper spirituality. She insists her sons — Tamerlan, who was killed in a gunfight with police, and Dzhokhar, who was wounded and captured — are innocent.

"It's all lies and hypocrisy," she told The Associated Press in Dagestan. "I'm sick and tired of all this nonsense that they make up about me and my children. People know me as a regular person, and I've never been mixed up in any criminal intentions, especially any linked to terrorism."

Right-wingers who exploit the Boston tragedy to attack immigrants are replaying a script that goes back 112 years

A terrorist attack, small in scale but brutal in effect, shocks the nation. The leading perpetrator is an American with foreign connections, apparently linked – at least in his own mind – to a worldwide movement of violent extremists. Furthermore, this young man in his late 20s with the unpronounceable name had attracted suspicion in the past and struck some observers as unstable, although even members of his own family did not suspect he was planning such a spectacular crime.

In the aftermath of the attack, some people assume it was the work of a sinister global conspiracy against America, despite little evidence. Others see an unemployed and alienated loner, unable to connect to the promise of the American dream, who turned to extremism out of personal despair or mental illness. Many political commentators call for a crackdown on immigration, the restriction of civil liberties and an aggressive military-style counterattack against anti-American radicalism, both at home and abroad. As the nation’s energetic young president puts it, counteracting this tide of violence is the most significant question facing the United States, and one that could even endanger the nation’s future.

Conspiracy theorists aren't unique to the U.S. They're also part of the Muslim world, including the alleged bomber

We've spent some time looking at the conspiracy theories that arose after the Boston Marathon bombing, but it's worth looking at the conspiracy theorist that allegedly started this all: Tamerlan Tsarnaev. The elder and more radical of the two brothers suspected of perpetrating the attack "believed in basically every conspiracy theory," as Dave Weigel put it, linking to an AP report showing that Tsarnaev was interested in everything from Alex Jones to "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion," a seminal anti-Semitic conspiracy tome.

It's not particularly surprising that Tsarnaev would be drawn to a wide range of conspiracy theories, as research shows that people prone to believing one conspiracy theory will likely believe many -- even if they're completely contradictory. And he fits a profile of a type of person likely to be drawn to conspiratorial thinking, considering he was allegedly alienated from and disgruntled with society.

Important details like the suspects' weapons, NYC plans and the shootout keep changing. It's fueling conspiracies

In the aftermath of massive, complicated crimes it's not uncommon for a bit of crucial information to be immediately put forward by police, only to be contradicted later on. While it's understandable that initial leads and assertions might end up being wrong in a dynamic situation like the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing, wholesale contradictions can encourage skepticism of the motives of those releasing inaccuracies -- as with initial, false reports that Osama bin Laden hid behind his wife when U.S. forces shot him. Another effect of changing details can be to encourage conspiracy theorists who latch onto inconsistencies, and to undermine trust in authorities.

Now, almost a week after the Tsarnaev brothers fought a rolling street battle with dozens of heavily armed police officers, we learned Wednesday night that they had only a single handgun, according to sources who spoke with ABC News and the AP, something that directly contradicts what officials had previously said.

"Losers" was what their uncle called them, and based on what we've learned since, it was Tamerlan Tsarnaev who fit society's measure for being one. Not that he didn't try to suggest otherwise. According to the Boston Globe, though "the older brother liked to look like a man of means, once posing for a photo in front of a gleaming Mercedes sporting a long wool scarf and white leather slip-on shoes," it was all an act. And anyway, it was his wife Katherine's long hours as a home healthcare aide that kept the family afloat, not Tamerlan's boxing prowess or the odd jobs he occasionally worked.

We don't know why Tamerlan and his brother blew up the Boston Marathon -- we may never really know -- but we do know that in doing so, they were performing a kind of masculinity that took control of the city through public destruction.

Who is Katherine Tsarnaeva?

That's one of the central questions in the ongoing investigation of the bombings at the Boston Marathon. Ms. Tsarnaeva was the wife of the late Tamerlan Tsarnaev and sister-in-law to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the respective suspects 1 and 2 in the case.

But unlike the Tsarnaev brothers, she is a New England native and a convert to Islam, and by all appearances a devout one; she has recently been photographed leaving her parents' Rhode Island home in the traditional hijab.

According to her attorneys, Tsarnaeva is fully cooperating with the investigation into the incidents in Boston; she had been the subject of federal scrutiny once authorities became aware Tamerlan Tsarnaev was married.

BOSTON (AP) — The body of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev (TA'-mehr-luhn tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) is still being held by the Massachusetts medical examiner.

Tsarnaev died Friday after a gun battle with police. Authorities have said his 19-year-old brother, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-KHAHR'), ran over him as he fled.

Dzhokhar was later apprehended in Watertown and has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction. He could face the death penalty.

A spokesman for the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Wednesday that Tamerlan Tsarnaev's body is still in the medical examiner's custody. He wouldn't comment on whether Tsarnaev's wife has asked to claim the body.

Authorities say the brothers planted two bombs near the finish line of the marathon April 15. Three people were killed and more than 200 were wounded.

The aunt of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the Boston bombing suspect killed in a police shoot out, was denied her request to see her nephew buried in a Boston mosque. The aunt of the suspects told NBC that "one of the suspects' uncles approached the imam of a Boston mosque attended by the brothers to request a burial and funeral service but was declined."

This mosque is not the only one in Boston reticent to lay the 26-year-old's body to rest. The denials and equivocations are a part of a broader pattern of Muslims and Chechens understandably distinguishing themselves from the Tsarnaev brothers in the massacre's wake. Via NBC:

According to a report from a "senior law enforcement official," The Boston Globe noted that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev confessed to planting the Boston marathon bombs before he was read his Miranda rights. However, this is not necessarily a problem for the prosecution.

Miranda establishes that statements made by a suspect in custody in response to interrogation are not admissible against the defendant in court unless the defendant has been properly Mirandized. But, according to the Globe report, authorities aren't sweating this detail -- they believe that witness testimony from the man carjacked by the Tsarnaev brothers will serve as ample evidence for guilt, even if the 19-year-old suspect's hospital bed confession is not admissible in court. Via the Globe:

Boxers and trainers who fought and worked with Tamerlan Tsarnaev remember a strong fighter -- and an odd loner

Edwin "La Bomba" Rodriguez, Massachusetts super middleweight contender, sparred with Tamerlan Tsarnaev two years ago. "Today I find out he's a terrorist and one of the Boston Marathon bombers," he posted on his Facebook page last Friday. "I'm glad I put a beating on him, but wish I'd known he was evil, because I wouldn't have slowed down on him..."

According to USA Boxing, Tsarnaev was registered in Massachusetts as an amateur boxer in 2004-2005 and in 2008-2010. He trained at the Somerville Boxing Gym and later at the South Boston Boxing Club. Apparently, his first amateur fight was at the Golden Gloves competition at Lowell Memorial Auditorium in January 2004. The Lowell Sun reported that he arrived in the United States and settled in Cambridge only five months earlier. His family had fled Grozny, Chechnya, which was ground zero in the Russo-Chechen wars of the mid-'90s and the early part of the twenty-first century. In 2003, the United Nations labeled it "the most destroyed city on earth."

To Tsarnaev, the Golden Gloves may have marked a beginning. "I like the USA," he told the Sun. "You have a chance to make money here if you are willing to work." "I think he can win the whole thing," his trainer said after that first bout. "He can throw." The trainer in the opposite corner was just as impressed. "There might not be a better fighter in the [178 lb.] class. He was good."

WASHINGTON (AP) — In the years before the Boston Marathon bombings, Tamerlan Tsarnaev fell under the influence of a new friend, a Muslim convert who steered the religiously apathetic young man toward a strict strain of Islam, family members said.

Under the tutelage of a friend known to the Tsarnaev family only as Misha, Tamerlan gave up boxing and stopped studying music, his family said. He began opposing the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He turned to websites and literature claiming that the CIA was behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and Jews controlled the world.

"Somehow, he just took his brain," said Tamerlan's uncle, Ruslan Tsarni, who recalled conversations with Tamerlan's worried father about Misha's influence. Efforts over several days by The Associated Press to identify and interview Misha have been unsuccessful.

Tamerlan's relationship with Misha could be a clue in understanding the motives behind his religious transformation and, ultimately, the attack itself. Two U.S. officials say he had no tie to terrorist groups.

Throughout his religious makeover, Tamerlan maintained a strong influence over his siblings, including Dzhokhar, who investigators say carried out the deadly attack by his older brother's side, killing three and injuring 264 people.
