Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford released a new TV ad for his congressional campaign, emphasizing that everyone makes mistakes and deserves "second chances."

“I’ve experienced how none of us go through life without mistakes,” Sanford says in the ad. “But in their wake we can learn a lot about grace, a God of second chances and be the better for it. In that light, I humbly step forward and ask for your help in changing Washington.”

Watch:

Sanford left office in disgrace in 2009 after revelations that he was conducting an affair with an Argentinian woman, which came to light after he disappeared from his state. He is running for his old congressional seat, recently vacated by Republican Tim Scott after Scott was appointed to Sen. Jim DeMint's senate seat.

Black conservatives have long been used as props by the GOP — and now by Lena Dunham, on Sunday night's "Girls"

So long Sandy, Donald Glover's black Republican on "Girls," we hardly knew ye. Then again, black Republicans have long been used as symbolic props, so why not on this show?

"It is very important to me, as a minority female, that Congressman Scott earned this seat. He earned this seat for the person that he is; he earned this seat for the results he has shown; he earned this seat for what I know he’s going to do in making South Carolina and making our country proud," said South Carolina governor Nikki Haley last month as she appointed Tim Scott to serve as the state's senator -- making him the only African-American in the Senate. This creepy doublespeak gave Haley a shot at having it both ways: celebrating diversity while implying it could be better and more fairly achieved by Republican bootstrapping.

The former governor says he will run in a special election for South Carolina's 1st district

Last seen getting divorced from his wife and engaged to his former mistress (and inspiring a nauseating number of "Appalachian Trail" jokes), former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, a Republican, will be running for Congress again.

Sanford told the National Review Online on Tuesday: "Officially we’re going to announce tomorrow, and then it’s off to the races."

The race is a special election in the state's 1st district, which will soon be vacated by Rep. Tim Scott, R, and which Sanford held for three terms from 1995-2001. Current Gov. Nikki Haley, R, tapped Scott to replace Sen. Jim DeMint, R, who left his seat to take a post at the Heritage Foundation.

The conservative Republican will become the only black member of the Senate

Nikki Haley has chosen Rep. Tim Scott, R-S.C., to replace Sen. Jim DeMint when he steps down in January to head up the Heritage Foundation.

The New York Times' Caucus blog reports that three Republican officials say that Scott will take the spot, making him the first black senator from the South since the late 1800s -- and the only black senator in Congress.

From the Times:

Ms. Haley seriously considered a number of potential contenders, particularly Jenny Sanford, the ex-wife of former Gov. Mark Sanford, who supported Ms. Haley in her race two years ago. But in choosing Mr. Scott, she selected a lawmaker with a strong conservative voting record during his two years in Congress.
