Wendy Davis' filibuster against a restrictive abortion bill on the floor of the Texas Legislature last week immediately became the stuff of legend -- and though Democrats' battle in Texas continues, Davis' admirers have taken her crusade from the realm of the political into the stuff of pop culture.

Comparisons between Davis and just about every popular female television character of the last few years have sprung up across the Internet -- most commonly, to Emilia Clarke's Daenerys Targaryen from "Game of Thrones," Amy Poehler's Leslie Knope from "Parks and Recreation," and Connie Britton's Tami Taylor from "Friday Night Lights."

The last one makes sense, sort of -- Davis and Taylor both are Texan women with teased heads of blond hair.

Less than a week after state. Sen.
"We will fight as we begin the session again on Monday," she said

Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis, D, said that her 11+ hour filibuster of the state's harsh abortion bill was not the end of the fight against the legislation. "We will fight as we begin the session again on Monday," she said on NBC's "Meet the Press." " "I don't think that we will concede that the battle is over."

Davis also accused Republican politicians in the state of using the legislation for political gain. “Politicians are using this issue to boost their own political aspirations, their own political ambitions, and they are bullying women and their liberties, their personal, constitutionally guaranteed liberties in the process,” she said on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Davis's filibuster prevented the legislation, which would ban abortions after 20 weeks, from passing the legislature last week. But Gov. Rick Perry has called a special session, which begins on Monday, in order to get it passed. This time, the bill is expected to make it through.

Punditry experts this week ended racism, fomented homophobia and grew mustaches

Today on the Sunday Shows: recapping the biggest news week ever. Have the gays successfully destroyed America by this point? Will John Boehner commit political suicide on immigration reform? What about the gays, again? And how about that Wendy Davis. Also, too, Julian Assange and Nancy Pelosi. And maybe, if there's time, a quickie segment about the gutting of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. All this and more on ABC's This Week, NBC's "Meet the Press," and CBS' "Face the Nation. "

First, on "This Week": "TRAITOR OR HERO?" This is, what, a month into the Snowden saga, and these are still the first words to appear on a news show? "TRAITOR OR HERO?" You're on a troll, Stephanopoulos.

And here is Julian Assange, from his safe room in London, tie knot loosened. An ABC News correspondent gives us some background: "Who is Julian Assange?" Is he destroying the world? Or is he just a dude in the Ecuadorian Embassy.

What can you tell us about Edward Snowden, Assange? For example: where is the little shit hiding? "I wish I could answer your question in more detail." Red eyes and a cough, he sounds like he has a nasty cold, the poor guy. Now he is making Edward Snowden's story all about himself. The two face very similar investigations, he says, both from the same court in Alexandria, Virginia, where you've got a low chance of receiving "justice."

This week's rulings were a welcome first step, but marriage laws have still been left in the hands of the states

HEADLINES AND FACEBOOK statuses have been declaring “DOMA is dead!” and other such hyperbole since Wednesday’s two U.S. Supreme Court rulings on marriage equality. Naturally, the LGBT community was overjoyed at the news with a rally outside The Stonewall Inn bringing gays and politicos together. An historic moment in LGBT rights warrants some celebration, even if the decisions are less than what gays hoped and less than the Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia, the case most resembling the Prop 8 battle.

I went to the rally, camera in hand, expecting to see the joyous faces of those who had been so worried while the SCOTUS decisions were being awaited. What I saw and heard was not a photo op: men and women, cautiously joyful, wandering through occasional bursts of enthusiasm. There was introspection, wonder, maybe even shell-shock. I went to the rally with a need for solidarity, feeling relief more than anything but the mood at the New York “victory” rally was like the tenuous ripples of a child stepping into a still lake. The water feels good, but what lies beneath? Was it trepidation or the cynicism often attributed to New Yorkers? Realism or pessimism?

Monumental achievements won this week -- from reproductive rights to marriage equality -- prove the power of voters

While most of us, most of the time, can be little more than passive observers to the policy-making portion of politics, landmark achievements this week showed that we can be a lot more than that, by turning the results of elections. Even if it doesn’t feel that way sometimes.

The Wendy Davis filibuster in Texas? The Supreme Court decision on DOMA? The immigration bill passing in the Senate? All of them were achievements by ordinary citizens who got involved and affected elections. These things didn’t just happen. They were the real outcomes of citizens voting, in contests that could have gone the other way just as easily.

The United States is an enormous nation, with an enormously complex political system – one that puts no one in charge, but instead relies on separated institutions sharing powers, federalism, and all sorts of other complications. As a result, it’s very difficult, most of the time, to see obvious links between a specific election and a specific outcome. Yes, every once in a while there’s an obvious consequence: no 2008 Democratic landslide, no Affordable Care Act. But frustration is far more common in the Madisonian system.

Davis tells Anderson Cooper that she knows the vote timestamp on the antiabortion bill was changed "intentionally"

Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, captured national attention on Tuesday with a marathon filibuster that defeated a draconian abortion omnibus bill in the state Senate. (Though the victory may be short-lived: Gov. Rick Perry has called a second special legislative session for July 1, giving antiabortion lawmakers 30 more days to try to pass the measure.)

Davis spoke with Anderson Cooper on Wednesday night about the experience of standing and speaking for 11 hours straight ("I underestimated how difficult it would be") and what the Texas legislative showdown could mean for the future of reproductive rights in Texas -- and democracy in the United States:

I think the most important thing we accomplished is we empowered the voice of people in Texas -- people who wanted to stand against this big government intrusion to their personal lives and liberty... What I think this is has done is empower people to understand that when they involve themselves in a democracy they truly can make a difference. They made a difference in the Texas Capitol yesterday, and I think this will linger, Anderson. I think that even if this bill passes in this next called special session, the reaction to it won't be a partisan one; it's a reaction coming from Republicans,, Independents and Democrats alike, which is saying: Gov. Perry, Lt. Gov. Dewhurst, stay out of my private decision making.

For years, Democrats' pro-choice stance was blamed for losing "values" voters. Today, that's all changing fast

The shouting came, like water bursting from a broken levee, just before midnight. The hundreds, maybe thousands, of orange-shirted activists camped out in the Texas Capitol had done everything they could to stall a vote on an abortion-restricting bill -- from staging a citizen's filibuster late last week, to cheering on the 13-hour one by Sen. Wendy Davis that Tuesday night.

"At what point must a female senator raise her hand or voice to be recognized over the male colleagues in the room?" demanded an exasperated Sen. Leticia van de Putte, who had come from her father's funeral and was trying to prevent the filibuster from being dismantled on procedural grounds. Her words were what did it. Minutes to the deadline for the end of the special session, Senate Republicans seemed to be calling a vote, and shouting was all that was left.

For years, observers have said the enthusiasm and mobilization is on the antiabortion side, but not that night. It was still a game of defense, but pro-choice politicians and activists were pushing back harder than ever seen before.

Texas Republicans want to get the national hero out of the state Senate. Maybe she should run for governor instead

It seemed a strange convergence early Wednesday morning: On the same day the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis pulled off a heroic filibuster that ultimately defeated draconian antiabortion legislation – and yet she could be a victim of that court decision, as state Republicans moved ahead with redistricting plans blocked in 2012 that could effectively eliminate her seat, even while she was filibustering.

I certainly think that voting rights and women’s rights activism ought to converge in Texas to make sure Davis keeps her seat, if she wants it. But Wednesday night I began to dream there might be an even better test for those two movements: Backing Davis in a run against Texas’s forgetful, pandering far-right Gov. Rick Perry.

Personally I thought Perry shamed himself with his slapdash run for president, but lots of people think it made him stronger at least on the right. Whatever. It certainly made national Democrats more aware of what Texans are living with. Wendy Davis’ filibuster made us more aware of the state’s progressive promise.

On Wendy Davis' filibuster (and, in a way, on DOMA), social media showed mainstream news what it couldn't ignore

On Tuesday, June 25, Sen. Wendy Davis of Texas stood for nearly 13 hours without food or drink, without rest, without leaning, without the ability to use the restroom, to filibuster Senate Bill 5 (SB 5), a legislative measure that would have closed 37 of the 42 abortion clinics in Texas, the largest state in the contiguous United States. Interested people from around the country, nay, the world, were able to watch this filibuster and the political maneuverings of those who tried to stop it, via a livestream on YouTube — one watched, at times by more than 180,000 people.

The filibuster was a gripping spectacle that kept me rapt for hours. On Twitter, people were able to offer support, however symbolic, for Sen. Davis’ efforts. There was a sense of community. For some levity, I couldn’t help remarking on Sen. Davis’ flawless hair, several hours into her ferocious stand.

Near midnight, after some intense and partisan efforts to derail Sen. Davis’ efforts, the impassioned crowd in the gallery began shouting and cheering, letting the senator know she did not stand alone. It was a sound of women fighting for their reproductive freedom in the only way they could: with their voices. I will never forget that sound. It awoke something in me I hadn’t realized had gone dormant.

From the Supreme Court to Austin and back again: The arc of online sound and fury bends toward justice

For 24 hours, the world of social media rocked like a roller coaster off its tracks. The outbursts of rage over the Supreme Court's decision to annul a key section of the Voting Rights Act Tuesday morning had barely subsided before environmentalists began obsessively tweeting every nuance of President Obama's climate change speech a few hours later. As afternoon became evening, Wendy Davis' filibuster in the Texas Legislature became a legend-in-the-making, complete with a stunning chaotic denouement watched in real time streaming video by hundreds of thousands. The following morning, a rolling tide of ecstasy and joy swept across the Internet within seconds of the news that the Supreme Court had ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional.

Of course, I should be clear: This was my world of social media. We are filtered by whom we follow and friend. If I associated with a different motley crew, the cries of joy and rage could easily flip places. Social conservatives believe that what happened in Texas Wednesday night was a travesty of democracy and that Jesus is weeping in dismay over the prospect of a flood of gay marriage in California. And they're on Twitter too.

Just as Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, rose to national prominence with a Tuesday filibuster to defeat a highly restrictive antiabortion omnibus bill, the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated a key provision of the Voting Rights Act that helped her secure her seat in the Legislature.

As reported by Zachary Roth at MSNBC, Davis was one of many candidates -- and tens of thousands of Texas voters -- impacted by Republican redistricting efforts in 2011:

The GOP plan radically changed the demographic makeup of Davis’ district, among others, moving tens of thousands of black and Hispanic voters into neighboring districts. In fact, of the 94 precincts that were over 70% minority, Republicans cut out 48. In the new map, blacks and Hispanics were placed in separate districts from each other and were outnumbered by the white conservative majority, which tends to vote Republican.
