PICO IYER Pico Iyer's first book was the compelling collection of travel impressions titled "Video Night in Kathmandu." He has since written two works of nonfiction, "The Lady and the Monk" and "Falling Off the Map," and a novel, "Cuba and the Night." He is a regular contributor to both Condé Nast Traveler and Time magazines. "Tropical Classical: Essays from Several Directions" will be released in April 1997. Born in Oxford, Iyer was educated at Eton, Oxford and Harvard. He currently divides his life between California and Japan.

PETER MAYLE Peter Mayle is the author of the bestselling "A Year in Provence," which was honored in the British Book Awards as the Best Travel Book of the Year, as well as a sequel, "Toujours Provence," and the novel "Hotel Pastis." Before devoting his days to writing, Mayle spent 15 years in the advertising industry, first as a copywriter and later as a reluctant executive. He has written for Esquire, Gentlemen's Quarterly, the London Sunday Times, the Independent and the Financial Times. His work has been translated into 17 languages.

JAN MORRIS Prolific and peripatetic, Jan Morris has written more than 20 books about her travels around the world. Her oeuvre ranges from the masterful essays published in "Journeys," "Destinations," "Among the Cities" and other collections to such classics as "Pax Britannica," "The World of Venice," "Hong Kong" and "The Matter of Wales." She has also written a novel, "Last Letters from Hav." She lives in Wales.

SIMON WINCHESTER Simon Winchester is the author of a dozen books, including "The Sun Never Sets," "Korea," "Pacific Rising" and, most recently, "The River at the Center of the World," about his travels up the Yangtze River in the heart of mainland China. A native of England, Winchester has lived in Africa, India and Hong Kong and is currently a resident of New York. He writes for numerous publications and is the Asia-Pacific editor for Condé Nast Traveler.

ISABEL ALLENDE Born in Peru, raised in Chile and a current resident of California, Isabel Allende is a world citizen as well as an internationally acclaimed writer. Best known for her fiction, she is the author of "The House of the Spirits," "The Infinite Plan," "Of Love and Shadows," "Eva Luna" and a short-story collection, "The Stories of Eva Luna," among other works. Her most recent book is "Paula," a moving autobiographical memoir of her family.
