Here are the final words of the captain and first officer of USAir Flight 427, as reported by Jonathan Harr in "The Crash Detectives" in the Aug. 5 New Yorker:

First officer Charles Emmett III, joking as the plane prepares to make it final descent into Pittsburgh: "Oh, ya, I see zuh Jetstream."

As Emmett says "Jetstream," a muted thump is heard on the cockpit voice recorder, followed two seconds later by the sound of three electrical clicks.

Germano: "Sheez."

Emmett: (grunt.)

More thumps are heard, then a rapid clicking. The plane begins to roll.

Germano: "Whoa!"

The engine sounds grow louder.

Germano to Emmett: "Hang on! Hang on!"

The autopilot disconnect begins to sound.

Germano: "Hang on!"

Emmett: (expletive).

Germano: "What the hell is this?"

Loud alarms fill cockpit. Plane begins to stall.

Germano: "Oh, God! Oh, God!"

Air traffic controller tells plane to maintain altitude.

Germano: "427 emergency!"

Emmett: "Shit."

Germano: "Pull!"

Emmett: "Ohh, shit!"

Germano: "Pull!"

Emmett: "God!"

Germano begins a scream that lasts the final one and a half seconds of the cockpit tape, before plane smashes nose-first into ground at 301 miles an hour.

Emmett: "No."

Tape ends.
