7 kids left by Nebraska father placed with family

Seven children abandoned by their father at a Nebraska hospital have been temporarily placed with their grandmother.

Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman Kathie Osterman says the state maintains custody of all nine children.

Grandmother Joanne Manzer says the two oldest children chose to go to another home to avoid changing schools.

Their father said he was overwhelmed when he left the children at an Omaha hospital last week. The state law that lets parents surrender their children was intended to protect infants but doesn't set an age limit. Some lawmakers are considering changing the law.
