Iran Makes Arrests In Killing Of Nuclear Scientist
TEHRAN,Iran (AP) — An Iranian news website is reporting several suspects have been arrested over last week’s killing of an Iranian nuclear scientist.
Ali Larijani, speaker of the Iranian parliament, said the suspects are being interrogated, and the investigation is continuing. He talked to Iran’s state Arabic language TV channel Al-Alam, and his comments were carried on the Tabnak.ir site.
Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, an official in Iran’s nuclear enrichment facility in Natanz, was killed in an explosion Wednesday after attackers attached a bomb to his car in Tehran.
Iran accused the U.S., Britain and Israel of involvement.
Washington denied any role in the assassination, and London condemned the killing of civilians. Israel has not commented publicly.
The West believes Iran is building nuclear weapons. Iran denies that.
Kenya-insurgent Information War Over Dead Children
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — An insurgent spokesman and residents in a southern Somali town say two Kenyan fighter jets apparently targeting a militant camp instead killed five children.
However, a Kenyan military spokesman said Monday that the jets hit an al-Shabab command center.
The competing claims are typical in the months-long battle between Kenyan troops and al-Shabab militants inside Somalia. Both sides use social networking sites to broadcast claims in the battle, but hardly any of those claims are verifiable by independent journalists.
Kenya has conducted numerous air raids in southern Somalia since sending troops over the border in October following a string of attacks by Somali gunmen on Kenyan soil.
China’s Number Of Web Users Rises To 513 Million
BEIJING (AP) — An industry group says China’s number of Internet users has surged past 500 million and is still growing strongly.
The China Internet Network Information Center said Monday the mainland’s number of Internet users stood at 513 million in December, up 12 percent from a year earlier.
China’s communist government promotes Internet use for business and education but tries to block access to material it considers subversive or pornographic.
The latest figures also showed the number of Chinese who surf the Web by mobile phone rose 17.5 percent to 356 million.
