Rio’s housing prices spell trouble in paradise

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Moving to Rio, I had visions of paradise, of a sprawling apartment with panoramic views over a palm-lined beach.

Instead, I found myself plunged into the inferno of one of the hottest real estate markets in the world.

Brazil’s burgeoning middle class is moving up in the world, into fancier high-rises. The discovery of vast oil deposits off the coast has flooded the city with renters carrying fistfuls of petrodollars. And property owners already are hiking rents in anticipation of Rio’s upcoming mega-events, the 2014 soccer World Cup and 2016 Olympics.

Property prices in some neighborhoods have risen six-fold in the past decade and now rival those in world capitals such as New York or Paris. I was moving from Paris and had previously lived in New York, so I thought I knew a little something about finding a place in notoriously difficult rental markets.

Hubris. It’ll get you every time.

Armed with the Sunday classifieds, I launched what was to become my epic quest for an apartment back in January. I went first to Rio’s showcase neighborhoods — tony, seaside Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon, the ones everyone imagines when they think of fabulous Rio. Perusing the ads, however, it seemed as if an extra zero had been tacked onto the price of every apartment. A studio with a shared toilet on the landing for $1000 a month? Or $2750 for a 400-square-foot (37-square-meter), one-bedroom on the first floor, apparently with no natural light? Could I be reading this right?

Unfortunately, I was. For the rent I used to pay on my Paris penthouse looking out onto the Eiffel Tower, I found I could get a postage stamp-sized place on the third floor of a down-at-the-heels Ipanema building with a spectacular view — into the neighbor’s bathroom.

These neighborhoods had become the favorite haunt of the expat crowd — deep-pocketed executives from foreign oil companies, banks, car manufacturers, cosmetics giants and other multinationals eager to get in on the booming Brazilian market. With the number of foreign workers in Brazil up some 60 percent over the past four years, demand for seaside digs here had exploded.

Priced off the beach, I focused my search instead on the stately neighborhoods of Flamengo and Botafogo on picturesque Guanabara Bay. Their beaches are too polluted for swimming, but at least I’d have a view of the sea, I thought.

Again, I made the rounds with classifieds in hand. About two-thirds of the time, real estate agents didn’t even bother to turn up for our scheduled appointments. When they did show, a quick peek through the open door frequently sufficed: A two-bedroom in which neither bedroom was large enough to fit a bed. (“Sleep on a mat,” the agent helpfully suggested.) A “loft” overlooking an eight-lane highway that was so loud it felt like it sat in the median.

My search stretched from weeks into months. I couch-surfed for weeks, shedding more of my belongings with each subsequent move — including my cat, whose jittery nerves required pet anti-depressants.

Rio’s property boom is a reversal of fortune for a city that had been in steep decline for decades since 1960, when Brazil moved its capital from the Marvelous City to the red-dirt plateau of Brasilia, and businesses fled to industrial Sao Paulo.

Now, the question on everyone’s lips is whether the city’s spiraling real estate prices are a bubble, like the one that burst in the U.S. in 2008, or a response to increased demand in a city surrounded by mountains and the sea with no room to grow. But even if the bubble were to burst, surely it would be after the 2016 Olympics, and I needed a place to live immediately.

As my desperation spiraled, the advice came pouring in from other expats who’d also been through the Rio housing crunch. “Find a street you like and go ask the doormen if there’s a vacancy coming up,” well-meaning friends counseled. Several sweat-drenched days going door-to-door under the scorching summer sun yielded nothing but shaking heads.

“This is Rio. You’ve got to lower your standards. And raise your budget,” was another frequent piece of advice.

But even with my newly minted standards, I found precious few places within my price range that were safe, sanitary and could fit a bed in the bedroom. Of the 70 places I looked at, I ended up applying for just four. Three of my applications were rejected out of hand because I didn’t have a guarantor who lived up to the owners’ now-stringent standards in a competitive market. Whereas in years past they would have almost certainly been willing to accept a multinational company, many owners now demand the guarantor be the owner of not one but two properties in the city of Rio de Janeiro.

For a foreigner parachuting into the country, it was an impossible demand.

“Don’t worry,” the real estate agents cooed, as the tears welled in my eyes. “We’ll find a solution.”

In the end, that meant paying an insurance company the equivalent of nearly two months’ rent to act as a cosigner, or roughly an extra $4,000 annually.

And it meant paying a hefty “finder’s fee” to help convince the landlady to choose me out of the long list of potential renters for the fourth and final apartment I bid on.

The apartment is old, with rusty pipes and possibly faulty electric wiring, and rent is a third more than I’d wanted to pay. But outside my bedroom window, palm trees shake in the breeze and the squawks from a flock of wild parrots echo through my apartment. Each time I leave my building, I’m greeted by the picture postcard sight of Sugarloaf Mountain and the Guanabara Bay, the expanse of its azure waters glinting warmly.

Finally, I’m home.

Rio de Janeiro (AP) — Just how many variations can you spin off the marvel of simplicity that is the bikini?

Judging by the options on spectacular display at FashionRio, the Marvelous City’s five-day-long summer 2013 fashion extravaganza, the options are endless.

Fancy pairing your string bikini top with spandex pants hung with rows of seductively dangling fringe, which provide so much more coverage than the country’s traditional “fio dental” or “dental floss” bottoms? Rio’s got just the thing for you.

Toying with the idea of kitting out your two-piece with a chain mail sheath emblazoned with a palm tree? Look no further.

Bikinis are Brazilian designers’ bread and butter, so while their winter collections tend to fall flat, with half-hearted attempts at outerwear, summer reliably sizzles. And the southern hemisphere summer collections that will hit the beach this coming January were no exception.

Sao Paulo-based label Triya served up the season’s most eye-popping options, a psychedelic rainbow that broke the beachwear mold. Beyond the fringed pant bikini, the brand’s brainchild, were tiny bottoms paired with long sleeve spandex tops cropped short to show off the models’ abs and a zebra-printed bandeau top that sprouted an ankle length skirt in aubergine silk with a bold slit up one side.

Swimsuits more in name than in function, many of Triya’s offerings looked like what you might wear to an ultra-chic beachside rave thrown by a billionaire. Putting aside the inevitable inconveniences of wearing a flowing silk ball gown to the beach, the only drawback to the wildly creative offerings were the bizarre tan lines they’d be sure to leave.

Cia. Maritima brought out the big guns – Victoria’s Secret angel Izabel Goulart among other Brazilian-born supermodels – to show off its teeny-weeny bikinis. Goulart rocked the catwalk in a leopard print string bikini fitted with a sexy spider’s web of thin yellow straps. Aline Weber, a regular on top runways in New York and Paris, worked a one-piece with cute cap sleeves and bold cutouts at the midriff. The pineapple prints gave a mouthwateringly tropical touch to the toothsome collection.

Va-va-voom one-pieces emerged as major winners here, with just about everyone who is anyone in Brazilian swimwear sending out variations on the vampish maillot. Top high-street beachwear label Blue Man sent out white swimsuits decidedly not made for anyone’s grandma, with how-low-can-you-go V necks. And a strapless one-piece had hiplines that started at just under the bust, the whole seemingly precarious contraption held, one can only hope, in place by a low-slung belt.

Lenny, Brazil’s reigning queen of patrician swimwear, served up racerback tanks that looked like they’d been tagged by a Rio graffiti artist and bikinis whose fuller coverage was undermined by a cat claw of strategically placed slashes. Paired with the bikini tops, the short, flippy skirts would make for the perfect transition from the sands of Ipanema to cocktail hour at the beachfront Hotel Fasano, among Rio’s chicest and most expensive.

A raucous, theatrical show by streetwear label Reserva wrapped up FashionRio in style late Saturday.

Models of all ages, from toddlers to septuagenarians, and several ethnicities frolicked, skipped and breakdanced on a catwalk strewn, like a sprawling bourgeois home, with couches and armchairs and an oversized dining room table. The soundtrack pumped as the models sat down for a family lunch and then boogied over the photographers’ pit to pull off their best dance moves in front of the snapping flashbulbs.

With its preppy multi-ethnic family vibe, the show had a sort of Abercrombie & Fitch thing going, but at the same time felt more authentically Brazilian than many of the week’s other shows, most of which featured just a sprinkling of nonwhite models.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — The Girl from Ipanema had a Parisian touch Thursday, as Maria Bonita Extra fielded a winter 2012 collection of bourgeois cocktail dresses that look as if they’d be more at home in a Haussmanian apartment than on the sands of Copacabana.

In silk chemisier dresses and cocktail numbers with constructed skirts that stood out through the hips, the models looked like something out of a 1970-era film set in one of Paris’ beaux quartiers.

The ultra-abbreviated hemlines, however, gave the clothes a youthful freshness: In the tres bourgeois collection’s sole shout out to Brazil, some of the dresses were so short they looked like swimwear.

Guests were still scrambling for their seats when the lights went down and a model appeared, toting a plastic clutch kitted out with glowing lights. But that was the sole gimmick in the collection, one of the strongest yet in the first three days of Rio’s five-day fashion extravaganza. Maria Bonita Extra is the second, less expensive line of the established Maria Bonita label.

Another second line, New Order, proved it knows how to work a theme.

The accessories label under Brazilian megabrand Osklen delivered an all-leather take on a 1960s-era aviation look, sending out models in blue, nude, orange and gold lame shift dresses. There was a clean, graphic appeal to the clothes, though a few of the pieces — like a pair of leather coveralls that folded awkwardly at the crotch as the model walked — looked like they’d be more comfortable on a hanger than on a human body.

The accessories breathed wit: Neck pillows were fitted out with straps and carried as purses, while lunch bags in translucent plastic served as clutches. The jewelry included gilded pilot wing pins.

Soft drinks in space was the theme of the collection by Coca Cola Clothing, an apparel license of Atlanta-based drink company. The presentation opened with a light show featuring a giant Coke bottle shooting into orbit, and the clothes that followed looked like what the crew on this unusual intergalactic craft might wear: moon boots emblazoned with Coke’s cursive label and fluorescent shift dresses like space stewardesses’ uniforms.

Espaco Fashion delivered a strong collection of drop-waisted flapper dresses with Art Deco details. The label served up the dresses in chiffon printed with mosaics of what appeared to be Rio cityscapes, drained of the city’s trademark saturated colors. Patches of feathers and dangling chains added a debonaire sophistication to the bold looks.

Bianca Marques’ debut on the Rio calendar opened with some fine footwork by a ballerina, who pirouetted at the top of the runway between two gilded candlesticks to a soundtrack of Space Age blips. The delicate display set the tone for the collection of frilly, romantic, girly dresses. Everything glowed a soft pink, like the inside of a seashell, and some of the looks were covered in pearls. Marques used to design for Maria Bonita Extra.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Glittering caballeras in Lurex pantsuits dominated the catwalks Wednesday on day two of Rio de Janeiro’s winter 2012 fashion week.

While many of the other displays have felt indistinguishable from the kinds of urban looks that dominate catwalks worldwide, a stellar south-of-the-border equestrian collection from Coven boldly forged a style of its own.

The brand, based in the interior state of Minas Gerais, is known for its knits. And designer Liliane Rebehy delivered with Wednesday’s collection: Her flirty crocheted skirts, mariachi-style pant suits in copper colored Lurex and T-shirts covered in fancy geometric embroidery managed to be at once totally unique and utterly appealing.

The day’s other highlight was the catwalk appearance of the three Brazilian soap opera stars, who walked at TNG. The audience shrieked and snapped cellphone pictures as the actors took to the runway in rustic chic denim separates.

At 2nd Floor, designer Thiago Marcon focused his attention on a most improbable Brazilian fabric, covering his flirty chemisier dresses in printed chiffon in a patchwork of what looked to be faux fur. Beyond being hard to wear in a tropical climate, the material was bulky, and the fur-fronted skirts made even the rail-thin models look more than a little hippy.

Still, the lighter pieces were appealing, especially the ivory chiffon blouses and dresses printed with an oversized growling lion. Graphic, boyish touches gave the clothes a slightly modish feel.
