The push to root out undocumented workers is feeding an underground economy -- and starving the public treasury

EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. — About seven of them are idly kicking the curb of the Home Depot parking lot on a Sunday. The lot is empty except for a few cars parked in the spaces near the entrance. They scan pickup trucks for wooden planks, tools, and a rolled-down window through which they can call, What are you building? Do you need help?

Alejandro (who asked to be referred to by his first name only, because he’s an illegal immigrant) is sitting on the curb, letting his flannel shirt rattle in the breeze. His baseball cap hides his eyes, but the unease is in his voice. His life is difficult enough as it is, he says; he hasn’t gotten a job in two weeks. "I have three sons and I’m stone broke," but anything, he says, is better than returning to his home in the poverty-stricken, war-torn state of Sinaloa.

He used to earn $9 a day working at a local restaurant, for three years, until his employer started using E-Verify, a computer system provided by the Department of Homeland Security meant to detect illegal immigrants. Employers run a query with an employee’s name and Social Security number, and E-Verify matches it with information on government databases. Alejandro’s query delivered a message of "tentative non-confirmation," so his employer asked him to provide a valid set of documents or to go to a Social Security office to solve the glitch.

The controversy of the Edu's last attempt will be reviewed for time to come

The U.S. rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie Slovenia today in World Cup soccer, and would have won if not for a controversial ruling by Koman Coulibaly, who disallowed a goal by Maurice Edu in the 86th minute.

Edu poked the ball in from close range off a free kick by Landon Donvoan, setting off an American celebration. But Coulibaly had blown his whistle. It was unclear at the time what Coulibaly had called.

According to the play-by-play at FIFA's Web site, a foul was called on Edu. The Washington Post’s soccer expert, Steven Goff, writes that the call will be “reviewed and scrutinized for a long time,” but in the moment, it enough to make Twitter crash.

Valter Birsa and Zlatan Ljubijankic of Slovenia scored in the first half. Donovan scored in the 48th minute and Michael Bradley scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute.

The so-called 'White House Gate Crashers' are back. Raising some serious questions about the Secret Service and security of POTUS, the infamous duo will debut on "The Real Housewives." Bravo TV says Michaele Salahi is one of the five women to be featured in the upcoming “Real Housewives of D.C.”

Salahi and her husband, Tareq, crashed president Obama’s state dinner in November, snapped photos with President Obama, V.P. Joe Biden, Katie Couric, called Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel “Ron,” and then simply went home and posted the pictures on Facebook.

Bravo had announced in May that the "Real Housewives" would be "scouting the D.C. area to identify...women who have their pulse on the most important cultural events, political galas, gallery openings and fund-raisers in Washington society,"noted NYDaily News.

John Goodman has lost weight and everyone is scrambling to find before and after shots. Monsters and Critics calculates the 57-year-old lost 100 pounds, and USA Today says that he stole the spotlight at last night’s L.A. awards, looking healthier than he ever has. A site is saying he lost 100 pounds, but USA Today wasn't able to get a number from Goodman's publicist. All they found out was that he did it the kosher way, through diet and exercise.

But Entertainment Weekly’s Clark Collis is so concerned, he can’t sleep at night, he says. Because the actor who played the part of Vietnam War vet Walter Sobchak in “The Big Lebowski,” may not be able to play the part again if the Coen brothers decide to make a sequel.

The Army reacted to reports of unmarked and misidentified graves at the Arlington Cemetery Thursday by demoting superintendent John Metzler and sending him a letter of reprimand. But before bells ring for justice finally served, read the letter a little closer: It will be in his file for less than a month.

Metzler has been accused of not reining in his deputy superintendent, Thurman Higginbotham, as he lost track of remains, leading to bodies piled on top of one another, sites improperly identified and remains popping up in supposedly empty grave sites, a situation that went on for six years.

A yearlong Salon investigation into mismanagement at the cemetery led to the Army investigation that resulted in Metzler's demotion.

Metzler’s letter of reprimand (PDF), posted on the Army’s website yesterday, has the subject heading: “Official Reprimand – Three years,” but Clause 6 reads that though the memorandum will be filed in his official personnel folder for three years, it is not permanent, and may be withdrawn upon "your separation from the Department of Army." Metzler announced only last month that he would be retiring July 2. Why even announce a three-year reprimand if he’ll be off the hook in less than a month?

It’s a big statement to say, as Arthur Laffer did this Monday in a Wall Street Journal op-ed, that “The economy will collapse in 2011.” And it’s also easy to understand why many are trying to find out how the famed supply-sider is arguing his case. There's nothing like a mouth-gaping claim to get your page views to skyrocket.

In simple terms, here’s Laffer’s reasoning: President Obama is raising taxes, or more precisely, President Bush’s tax cuts expire on Jan. 1. The wealthy will naturally shift their production and income out of next year into this year, which will, in turn, mean that next year, there will be no growth or spending.

As a Sergio Hernandez is killed at Rio Grande, shouldn't we be thinking hard about sending more troops there?

President Obama recently decided to deploy 1,200 troops to the U.S.-Mexican border, and Republicans in Congress are pushing to dispatch thousands more than that. But this week's news that a 15-year-old was shot and killed by Border Patrol agents -- on top of a similar shooting death two weeks ago -- suggests the possibility that increased security may fuel more violence, instead of pacifying the border.

On Monday, Sergio Adrian Hernandez Huereca and his friends were reportedly playing in a dry section of the Rio Grande, in Mexico, and throwing rocks at border guards. According to an eyewitness, an agent arrived on a bike and started shooting at the teenagers. Hernández hid behind a wall, and when he looked out, he was shot. A U.S official quoted by the Associated Press said the agent didn’t enter Mexico, and according to the FBI, border security was responding to a group of suspected illegal immigrants trying to cross. Late Tuesday night, a banner appeared on the bridge under which Hernández was shot. It read: "U.S. Border Patrol we worry about the violence in Mex and murders and now you. Viva Mexico!"

After being freed from prison for attempting marriage, they call it quits. Also: Why they aren't actually "gay"

Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, reportedly the first "gay" couple to attempt marriage in Malawi, were recently released from jail after six months of imprisonment. Just a week later, though, Monjeza has found a new partner -- and her name is Dorothy.

There were signs of the split during the trial: "I have had enough," he said. "I was forced into the whole drama and I regret the whole episode. I want to live a normal life ... not a life where I would be watched by everyone, booed and teased." Gay rights campaigners blame the couple's breakup on fears of violent retribution. Monjeza's uncle was reportedly determined to prevent them from getting back together after being released. Chimbalanga was warned not to set foot in the village or they would "deal with him." Queerty writes that Monjeza's sudden conversion hints at societal pressure and quotes him as saying that he didn't want to be associated with "gay trash."

Karenna Gore Schiff, the eldest daugher of the former Vice President, announced she’s separating from her husband only one week after Al and Tipper Gore provoked some web whimpering of their own.

Kalee Kreider, a spokeswoman for the former vice president said neither the Gores or the Schiffs want to comment about their particular separations, But they want to be honest so they can hopefully stave off rumors. Still, a friend of the Schiffs told People magazine that “a lot of psychoanalysis of the Gores is going on.” Dana Chivvis of Aol’s Politics Daily blog posed the inevitable question: “Is there something in the water?”

Karenna, 36 and Andrew Schiff have been separated for a few months and are reportedly in marriage counseling but, according to People magazine, they have no plans to divorce. The Schiffs have three children: Wyatt, 10; Anna, 8; and Oscar, 3.

The measure will cost much more than state coffers allow. Is it really worth it?

Arizona's harsh new immigration law has taken quite a beating in the past week.

President Obama has called it “misguided” and promised to keep an eye on it. Attorney General Eric Holder said the federal government may challenge the law. Calls for boycott are multiplying, threatening to stagnate Arizona’s already weakened economy.

But maybe the state's lawmakers should see all these potential obstacles as a blessing. Because the truth is, Arizona may not be able to afford this law anyway.

No detailed estimate of the new law's costs has yet been calculated, but the Immigration Policy Center’s blog, Immigration Impact, did dig out a revealing fact sheet that was put together by Yuma County Sheriff Ralph Ogden back in 2006, when a similar bill was passed (only to be vetoed by then Governor Janet Napolitano).
