NEW YORK (AP) — A mother who tossed her toddler into the Hudson River after a sudden onset of psychosis can return to India and her children. Manhattan prosecutors have agreed she was mentally ill but has improved.
A judge said Friday Devi Silvia can continue treatment in India. New York authorities will monitor her progress.
The law firm that represented her, Bingham McCutchen, says it's a just result for a devoted mother. The firm says she had no idea what was happening to her when she threw her daughter into the river and leaped in herself in May 2010.
Prosecutors say she thought a voice told her to jump in.
She was charged with attempted murder. Prosecutors agreed to let her resolve the case by pleading not guilty because of mental illness.
