New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio drops Staten Island Chuck and declares 6 more weeks of winter

As the new mayor put it: "Live by the groundhog, die by the groundhog”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's first interaction with Staten Island Chuck, the groundhog who holds in his little paws the difference between a swift spring and six more weeks of winter, did not go off without a hitch.

As de Blasio tried to hold Chuck (full name: Charles G. Hogg), the squirmy little guy wriggled free of the mayor's grip and made a mad dash to escape from his pen.

But don't worry: Chuck was swiftly collected by a zookeeper...and then he saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter.

Still, de Blasio can take comfort in the fact that, however tumultuous his first official meeting as mayor with Chuck may have been, at least the furry fellow didn't take a chomp out of the progressive mayor's hand. (Mike Bloomberg wasn't so lucky.)
