He's got nowhere near the media presence he had just a few years ago, but make no mistake: Pat Buchanan hasn't gone anywhere, and he still really, really hates America's immigrants.
Writing at his new perch with the totally fringetastic WND.com, Buchanan recently celebrated the resurgence of "ethnonationalism" in Europe (which doesn't have a bad history with that kind of thing at all, no sir, nope, nu-uh).
Pointing to a recently successful anti-immigrant referendum in Switzerland, which seeks to impose quotas on all immigration, Buchanan expressed his hope that we are witnessing the dawn of a new era in European politics, one in which the old world's far-right parties will "send a shock wave across Europe and a message to the world that Europeans are rejecting the future being planned for them."
You might find it a little odd that the stridently nationalistic Buchanan would devote so much digital ink to the happenings in not-America — but be forewarned: There's a method to Pat's madness.
"What has all this to do with us?" Buchanan writes. "The ethnonationalism roiling Europe is not unique to Europe," he answers. "It is roiling the world. And it is not absent from the hearts of Americans."
"How would Americans vote on a timeout on all immigration?" Buchanan asks again, really leaning on that particular rhetorical trope. "How would Americans vote, if given a chance, to repudiate our entire political elite?"
Buchanan never definitively answers his own questions — but we think it's fair to say that anyone even a smidgen familiar with his oeuvre can hazard a guess.
