Last night, in an overzealous case of outrage-trolling, right-wing blogger Mark Finkelstein wrote a post accusing MSNBC's Chris Hayes of sexism.
The NewsBusters contributing editor was peeved with a line from Hayes, who was discussing the still-unproven claims that ISIS terrorists are coming through the border (the italics are my own):
"...in the years since September 11, there have been occasional stories of this type. Sort of, a kind of girl talk mash-up of the fear about the border and the fear about terrorism being fused together."
The headline stated: "Chris Hayes Dismisses Concerns Over Terrorist Border Infiltration As 'Girl Talk.'"
This would certainly be a sexist remark -- an issue for the "MSNBC p.c. police," to use Finkelstein's words -- if Hayes wasn't talking about the DJ Girl Talk, whose music is a series of remixes and mashups.
Finkelstein updated his post to acknowledge the misunderstanding:
"UPDATE: Reader Tom E. has brought to my attention that 'Girl Talk' is the name of a DJ who specializes in mashups. I'd surmise that, like me, most Hayes viewers didn't get the cultural reference and took 'girl talk' at face value."
More important than the mixup is the actual Hayes segment. The "All In" host was talking to New York Times journalist Michael Schmidt to discuss his piece debunking conservative-pundit claims that militants are planning to cross the border.
