The world's most popular porn site, PornHub, just released its "2014 Year in Review," an in-depth report on X-rated search trends that turns the deepest, darkest recesses of the human sexual psyche into colorful little bar graphs. I tell you, there's nothing quite like seeing international data on the popularity of creampie videos made to look like a series of attractive paint swatches.
The biggest item of note is the smutty reign of all things girl-on-girl. Internationally, the top gaining search term in 2014 was “lesbian seduces straight girl," just above “shemale fuck girl” and “lesbians scissoring." In the U.S., the No. 1 search term was "lesbian," a leap from 15th place the previous year. Among women, this trend hold even stronger: "For instance, ‘eating pussy’ is over 900% more likely to be searched by a woman than a man, as are terms like ‘tribbing,’ ‘lesbian scissoring’ and ‘ebony lesbians’ which on average are over 600% more likely to be searched for by ladies," explains the report. Women were also more likely to seek out female reality-TV stars like Kim Kardashian, Mimi Faust and Farrah Abraham.
How, exactly, to make sense of the sapphic boom? PornHub notes, "Incidentally, 2014 was also a huge year for gay marriage in the States, with 19 states having ruled in favor of legalizing gay marriage." It's quite possible that the increasing acceptance of same-sex relationships has something to do with it -- but I also suspect that anxiety around that increasing acceptance plays a significant role. "Lesbian seduces straight girl" suggests resistance and surrender -- it's quite different from "Enthusiastic, harmonious and mutual lesbian sex."
Also note that in the U.S. searches for "ebony" jumped 94 spots to take sixth place in popular searches. Sexual fantasy is always in search of a forbidden frisson -- and fraught social issues tend to lend a helping hand, so to speak.
On a lighter -- but, ehem, heavier -- note, the top gaining search term in the U.S. is, wait for it, “big booty,” with a 486 percent increase, followed by "big tits," surprising exactly no one.
Globally, there are very few surprises. "If Pornhub users all over the world are thirsty for one thing in particular, it’s teen-themed porn, as ‘teen’ was the most searched term in the world both this year and last," says the report. Humans, ever lusting after the cradle. In the top twenty you'll find lots of porn standbys: milf, step mom, mom, teacher, threesome, anal and babysitter. You see? Some things never change.
That said, the report also does some awesome myth-busting about women: They’re more likely than men to search for "group-themed porn," including threesomes and gang bangs. And you thought ladies were all about rose petals and butterfly kisses.
