In an interview with Mexican broadcaster Televisa earlier this month, Pope Francis was asked if he liked being Pope. To which, he responded: “I don’t mind” before going on to say, “The only thing I would like is to go out one day, without being recognized, and go to a pizzeria for a pizza.”
Sunday, while Pope Francis toured through Naples on his Pope Mobile, the pizzeria came to him. Employees at the local pizzeria, Pizzeria Don Ernesto — who clearly heard Pope Francis missed his pizzeria-going days — surprised the pizza-loving catholic leader with a cherry tomato and buffalo mozzarella white-sauce pie. For a personal touch, it even included the words “Il Papa” written in dough:
A YouTube video captured the owner of the pizzeria, Enzo Cacialli, heroically emerging from the crowds, jumping over a barricade and handing the Pope the pizza as he approached in his mobile. The Pope couldn’t turn down a perfectly delicious pizza tribute. Applause erupted from the crowd.
This random act of kindness could be just the type of encouragement the Pope Frances needs to tackle the full 5-year tenure.
