Bill Maher stands up for Sanders: "F*ck yeah!" — voting against Iraq War proves he can handle foreign affairs, Maher says

"The guy who voted right on the Iraq War? Yeah I do," Maher said when asked if Sanders was as ready as Hillary

Bill Maher made the case for Sen. Bernie Sanders on Friday's "Real Time." Maher began by noting Sanders came back from 30 points down in Iowa to be competitive.

"This is a year when anything can happen. I heard a lot about 'Donald Trump will never,' 'Donald Trump will never,' and then Donald Trump did everything they said he would never do. I think the rules are out the window until proven otherwise."

Maher went on to say that politics may revert to normal at some point but until that happens, "doesn't Bernie deserve the people who have been saying 'Oh, I like Bernie but... he can't be elected' to shut up? The Bernie But'ers. Hasn't he earned that much?"

MSNBC host Alex Wagner pushed back, arguing that if anyone deserves something it's Hillary Clinton. Maher asked if she was on Team Hillary but Wagner indicated she was too undecided because Sanders has a compelling message on economic policy and the two of them had a substantive debate when it came to foreign policy but it made a compelling case for Clinton. "Seriously, do you think he's at the level that we need?"

"Fuck yeah!" Maher said enthusiastically to audience applause. "The guy who voted right on the Iraq War? Yeah, I do."

Conservative panelist Armstrong Williams also suggested that when it comes to young people that they are intelligent enough to know the difference in policies and are no longer interested in "left or right they're interested in what works for them, now." Maher joked he loves that young people are in it for the oldest guy ever to run because he's authentic. "Authentic? He doesn't even own a comb, that's pretty damn authentic," Maher said.
