NYC public schools closed to honor the Lunar New Year for the first time ever

In honor of the culture-affirming closures Salon filmed the annual Chinese New Year parade in Lower Manhattan

Students at New York City public schools got the day off to celebrate the Lunar New Year for the first time ever. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the closure, that honors the holiday celebrated by Asian communities, last June. Students will also have Muslim holidays Eid al-Firt and Eid al-Adha off.
