WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats are calling for a criminal investigation into an improper $25,000 donation Donald Trump's charity made to a political group supporting Florida's attorney general after her office said it was weighing legal action against Trump University.

Every Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee signed a letter to the Justice Department Tuesday asking for investigators to determine whether the 2013 donation violated federal bribery or tax laws. Charities are barred from political giving, and Trump later paid a $2,500 IRS fine.

The Associated Press reported in June that Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi personally solicited the political donation from Trump after her office received complaints from former students seeking refunds. The Republican presidential nominee's campaign says the charity check was a mistake and that he had intended to use personal funds.
