President Barack Obama has ordered the intelligence community to conduct a full review into the election-related hacking that was intended to influence the 2016 presidential election.

With results that are expected to be delivered before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20, the investigation is meant to ascertain the extent of Russian interference in the election and offer lessons as to how such meddling can be detected and averted in the future, as CNN reported on Friday.

"The President has directed the Intelligence Community to conduct a full review of what happened during the 2016 election process. It is to capture lessons learned from that and to report to a range of stakeholders. This is consistent with the work that we did over the summer to engage Congress on the threats that we were seeing," White House Homeland Security and Counterterrorism Adviser Lisa Monaco told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast.

"You want to do so very attentive to not disclosing sources and methods that would impede our ability to identify and attribute malicious actors in the future," Monaco added.

The intelligence community officially determined on Oct. 7 that the Russian government was responsible for multiple attacks directed against Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and the Democratic Party in general, according to The Washington Post on Friday.

On Thursday, Republicans announced they were launching a wide-ranging probe of Russia's involvement.
