Actor Ralph Macchio joined "Salon Talks" to discuss what persuaded him to return to the iconic role of the karate kid, Daniel LaRusso, in a new spin-off series "Cobra Kai," premiering May 4 on YouTube. "I'm so protective of that character and the legacy of that film. It's the fan's movie," Macchio told Salon. "To go back to the well and fall short, it was easier to let it stand on its own. Our creators knew how to write for a new generation... and they also are the biggest fanboys of the movie. They have such respect for the characters and embrace that legacy in a positive way."It's been 34 years since fish out of water Daniel LaRusso and high school bully Johnny Lawrence faced each other in the beloved 1980s teen drama "The Karate Kid." Watch the video above to see how the "Cobra Kai" series explores bullying in the Facebook era, and what makes a good reboot.
