"I was undiagnosed bipolar and just didn't factor that into why I was bad with money," comedian and "Bad with Money: The Imperfect Art of Getting Your Financial Sh*t Together" author Gaby Dunn shared on "Salon Talks."

Dunn opened up about her favorite chapter in the book, which deals with how our mental health directly affects our spending habits. "After eight years of mistakes, it started to make sense and I started to understand the ups and the downs of manic spending and depressive spending." When she realized that the two were connected, both improved. "I don't know if you can safely start saving, unless you're mind is working correctly"

In "Bad with Money," the writer, who is also a popular YouTuber (she is one half of the channel "Just Between Us"), is tackling problems millennials are facing in the midst of paying down student loans, negotiating salaries, and beginning to save for retirement. "We graduated college into a terrible job market, into a housing crisis, into rising healthcare costs. We graduated with more student loans than boomers and Gen X had. We were not set up to succeed," Dunn said.
