Senator Doug Jones calls out Trump's failure to condemn white nationalism

On “Salon Talks,” Senator Doug Jones, a Democrat from Alabama, spoke out against white supremacy and encouraged his colleagues to condemn it. “We have to continue to both address it straight up, but I also think that we have to address some of the underlying causes,” Jones told Salon.

Jones also discussed his new book “Bending Toward Justice: The Birmingham Church Bombing that Changed the Course of Civil Rights.” which explores his role in prosecuting two of the four former KKK members that carried out the bombing.

Salon’s executive editor Andrew O’Hehir asked Jones for his response to the recent mass shooting at a New Zealand mosque that took the lives of 50 people and injured 50 others. Jones called out President Trump’s response and other public officials who failed to properly address the hateful nature of the tragedy.

“Everyone gets tired of hearing, ‘Our thoughts and prayers are with people.’ That is the standard line. We need to do more to stand up and speak out,” he said. “When you see what's happening in New Zealand, that seems to be transported from America. You know, we are part of a globe. We are part of a community that's much bigger than ourselves.”
