Kathy Griffin: Studio execs advised me to “never say the word Trump again”

When a single photograph featuring a Donald Trump mask, sent Kathy Griffin from the “D-List” to Hollywood’s blacklist, several studio executives offered her advice. On “Salon Talks,” Griffin shared why she ignored their advice and instead paved a new path for herself in the industry.

“A lot of the guys that came at me after the photo, the Jeff Zucker's and the agency heads, and the studio heads and all that stuff, these are the same guys that told me 20 years ago my nose is too big or I'm too old or I'm too ugly,” she told SalonTV. “I've generated billions of dollars of revenue for all these companies. I've worked for every network you can imagine. I've made probably about $75 million in my own career. I'm an earner.”

And while some of those same executives told Griffin that she would “never going to work again” and was a “failure,” she decided to allow her fans decide the fate of her career. After all, “nobody can stop people from buying tickets,” she said.

Griffin set out on an international “Laugh Your Head Off" tour — named for the infamous Donald Trump mask photo — and is now debuting a part documentary, part standup special, “A Hell of a Story”, which documents the tour and her experiences being investigated by the FBI for conspiracy to assassinate the president. The film will be at theaters across the country as a Fathom events special on July 31.
