Why does the United States have such a shockingly low number of women in political office?
According to the Center for American Women in Politics, only 20 percent of the Senate, 19.3 percent of the House of Representatives and 23.7 percent of statewide executive offices are held by women. There are also only six female governors. Kelda Roys is a democratic candidate for governor of Wisconsin, hoping to unseat republican Scott Walker. As a former state representative and Congressional candidate, she described the many challenges women face when running for office, including funding disadvantages, skewed perceptions about appearance and judgments made about their family structures.
