With 78 million baby boomers nearing retirement age, our notions about retirement are about to get turned upside down. But unlike the old days of generous pensions and a dependable Social Security system, these days Americans will find it much more difficult to live comfortably as they get older and leave the workplace. The two-part series “Retirement Revolution” (10 p.m. EDT on PBS, check listings) explores practical strategies for dealing with retirement along with fresh perspectives on what retirement means for a new generation determined to do more with their golden years than improve their bridge games (although that’s a pretty worthy goal, let’s face it).

Futuristic thriller “Children of Men” airs at 8 p.m. EDT on Cinemax, then the story of “Minik the Lost Eskimo” is featured on “American Experience” (9 p.m. EDT on PBS, check listings). The finale of “The New Adventures of Old Christine” includes a guest appearance by “Seinfeld’s” Jason Alexander (9:30 p.m. on CBS), and Lauren and Whitney return to L.A. on “The Hills” (10 p.m. on MTV).
