NBA free agent Jason Collins is the first active male athlete to come out as gay in the history of professional sports. Many on Twitter viewed this very big news as, appropriately enough, very big news.
A sampling of the cheers for Collins and questions about what’s next for gay athletes in professional sports:
NBA Commissioner David Stern statement re: Washington Wizards center Jason Collins announcement today: (1/4)

“As Adam Silver and I said to Jason, we have known the Collins family since Jason and Jarron joined the NBA in 2001 (2/4)

Jason Collins' coming out is an illustration of how far we've come, and its comments section is a reminder of how far we have left to go.

If you don't understand that Jason Collins is a hero, stop embarrassing yourself.
— Pablo S. Torre (@PabloTorre) April 29, 2013
But not everyone was impressed with Collins’ historic announcement. Particularly Breitbart editor-at-large and expert Twitter troll Ben Shapiro, who doesn’t feel Collins is a very good ball player and so really doesn’t care much that he made the league-altering decision to come out:
If the only way you can make Sports Illustrated is by announcing your sexual proclivities, you're a bad player.
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) April 29, 2013
So Jason Collins is a hero because he's gay? Our standard for heroism has dropped quite a bit since Normandy.
— Ben Shapiro (@benshapiro) April 29, 2013
Jason Collins averaged 1.1 PPG, 1.6 RPG, and 0.3 BPG. All more relevant than the fact that he's gay.
