Sen. Frank Lautenberg, an 89-year old Democrat representing New Jersey, died of viral pneumonia Monday morning, NorthJersey.com is reporting.

Lautenberg was New Jersey's longest-serving senator of all time, and the last World War II veteran serving in the Senate. He recently announced that he would not seek reelection when his term ended in 2014.

Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican, will appoint someone to fill Lautenberg's seat until then.
