Beth Lisick

"Monkey Girl"

Published October 5, 2000 7:00AM (EDT)

In her latest book of stories, "Monkey Girl" (Manic D Press), spoken word artist Beth Lisick machetes her way through an overgrown tangle of strip malls, junk-food habits, smarmy resorts, 12-step programs, and yuppie pick-up joints.

The Beth Lisick Ordeal features spoken word performer Beth Lisick, a featured performer at the 1994 Lollapalooza Festival, the 1996 and 1997 South By Southwest Music Festivals, the 1998 Lilith Fair show at Shoreline Amphitheater and has opened for the likes of Jim Carroll, Exene Cervanka, Neil Youg and the late Allen Ginsberg. With the Ordeal, she combines her witty prose with the jazzy boldness of cutting edge San Francisco musicians George Cremaschi, Andrew Borger and David Cooper.

"Surgically examining all things Middle American... Lisick manages to be simultaneously sweet and threatening, funny and shocking." -San Francisco Examiner

Listen to The Beth Lisick Ordeal's "Weekend Warrior" (DuNord Recordings) or to a live recording of Lisick performing her poem "Empress of Sighs."
