Salon’s guide to what to watch

Prime Pick

Carrier

PBS / Carrier Project

Whether you're familiar with life in the Navy or just curious what it's like to live in a floating city with 5,000 other people, the PBS documentary series "Carrier" (premieres 9 p.m. EDT on PBS, check listings) is well worth a look. Combining "Top Gun"-style montages with heartfelt profiles of everyone from pilots to the lowest ranking enlistees, this detailed series follows the USS Nimitz, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, over the course of a six-month deployment in 2005.

Also…

Michelle Trachtenberg joins the cast of "Gossip Girl" as the eeevil ex-friend of Blair tonight (8 p.m. EDT on the CW), then another patient becomes mysteriously ill on the reliably raucous "House" (9 p.m. on Fox). Finally, the season finale of doc series "High School Confidential" airs at 10 p.m. on WE. Get out the hankies!
