Storm Over Everest

PBS / Jimmy Chin

If you've read Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" and followed the controversy surrounding his account of the 1996 tragedy on Everest, then you won't want to miss tonight's Frontline special "Storm Over Everest," a thorough and gripping account of the day eight people died on the mountain. Filmmaker David Breashears, who was on Everest at the time of the tragedy filming an IMAX movie, pieces together that day through footage and interviews. Unlike that IMAX movie, in fact, "Storm Over Everest" gives viewers a very palpable sense of how punishing, excruciatingly slow and crowded the final climb to Everest is, and clarifies the feelings of the survivors, from Beck Weathers to Sandy Hill Pittman, some of whom got a bad rap in Krakauer's book.
