Lou Dobbs for president?

A candidate for the "angry but average" voter.

Move over, Stephen Colbert: The Wall Street Journal's John Fund says CNN anchor Lou Dobbs is seriously considering a run for the White House in 2008.

The scenario, if you will: Michael Bloomberg gets in as a "favorite of East Coast elites," Hillary Clinton fails to win over voters who worry about her honesty and integrity, neither Rudy Giuliani nor any other GOP contender catches fire, and Dobbs jumps in as a "'fourth-party' candidate who could paint the three other contenders as completely out of touch."

As Fund notes, the Boston Phoenix says Dobbs could have some appeal to the "average-but-angry" voter. To his credit, Fund himself is a little more skeptical. Dobbs, he says, has made a name for himself "picking a couple of hot-button issues that are easily demagogued."
