Two clashing views on Iraq

A new Government Accountability Office report differs sharply from some of the administration's earlier assessments of progress in the war.

Sept. 4, 2007 | Editor's note: On Tuesday, the U.S. Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan arm of Congress, released a report on progress made in Iraq toward certain benchmarks set by the U.S. and Iraq. The report is decidedly less rosy than the picture of the war painted recently by the Bush administration and other war supporters. Conveniently, the GAO decided to document exactly how its take on Iraq differs from the administration's with a handy chart comparing the GAO's assessment with the one contained in an administration report from July of this year. A screen shot of that chart is below; a pdf of the full report is available for download here.
