The Clinton Foundation's donors
Read Salon's compilation of certain donations to the William J. Clinton Foundation, and a list of those who have paid speaking fees to the former president, here.
Oct. 11, 2007 | Editor's note: As the 2008 election campaign heats up, more attention is being paid to the unique situation that could develop if Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., is elected president and husband Bill Clinton becomes the first gentleman. That situation is complicated, of course, by the fact that Bill Clinton is a former president who has hardly retired since the end of his administration. And that in turn raises questions about potential conflicts of interest, real or perceived, that could arise if Hillary Clinton is elected.
Bill Clinton has declined to identify the donors to his William J. Clinton Foundation. By trolling tax records of foundations affiliated with corporations and wealthy individuals, however, Salon was able to identify certain donors who gave a total of nearly $36 million. This includes payments only from foundations to Clinton's foundation and excludes payments from individuals to Clinton's foundation. Those remain private. A list of the donation information that Salon was able to obtain follows on this page.
Clinton hasn't been focused only on his foundation; since leaving the White House in 2001, he has billed major corporations and other organizations more than $41 million for speeches. Salon has assembled a list of the organizations by combing through his wife's Senate financial disclosure forms. Multiple speeches for one organization have been combined to show total payments to the former president. That list appears on the following page.
