Sen. Johnson is discharged

The New York Times' Caucus blog is reporting that South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson has been discharged from George Washington University Hospital and is now at a rehabilitation facility.

Johnson, a Democrat, was felled by bleeding in his brain last December, provoking questions about what would happen to the Senate's Democratic majority if he died or was unable to remain in his seat. The governor of South Dakota, who would have been responsible for appointing a successor, is a Republican; the appointment of a Republican to fill Johnson's seat would have divided the Senate 50-50 between the Republican and Democratic caucuses.
