Fitzgerald: I won't opine on who's really responsible
No surprise here: Amid a Washington scandal involving allegations that leading Republicans leaned on supposedly impartial federal prosecutors, Patrick Fitzgerald says that he won't be sitting down with members of Congress to share his views about the Valerie Plame case. "I do not believe it would be appropriate for me to offer opinions, as your letter suggests the committee may seek, about the ultimate responsibility of senior White House officials for the disclosure of Ms. Wilson's identity," Fitzgerald writes in a letter to Rep. Henry Waxman, who had invited him for a meeting -- and maybe more -- about the case.
