Whither Edwards?

John Edwards may have dropped out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, but there's still potential for him to play a major role in how it all shakes out. Both campaigns, certainly, are well aware of this, which is why both are making a play for Edwards' endorsement. In such a tight race, Edwards' support could prove to be a deciding factor.

The latest news on this front is that Edwards has met in North Carolina with Hillary Clinton, a secret event Clinton slipped away from the press for, and that he was scheduled to meet with Barack Obama Monday. The Edwards-Obama sit-down won't happen as planned, but Time's Mark Halperin reports that it will be rescheduled.

Speaking to a local radio station, Edwards explained the meetings: "I promised both Sen. Clinton and Sen. Obama [that] before I decided whether I would endorse anybody or who to endorse that I would meet with each of them. So that's what that was about."
