A next-generation screen for the iPhone?

Sharp LCD with embedded optical sensors

Sharp, which is one of the manufacturers providing multi-touch screens for the iPhone, has just put out a newer, thinner, more advanced touch panel. At 1 millimeter thick, the new screen is half as deep as the old one, an advance made possible by Sharp's embedding a touch sensor in each pixel of the display.

The screen can also act as a scanner, collecting barcodes or business cards or even the prints off fingers you place on it. Mass production of the screen will begin next spring.
