Suffice it to say, he needs to find a way out, and probably soon (because government agents are fixing to fire a missile at the bunker to prevent the acid from spilling into a nearby aquifer). Plus, he has to save the people he has found inside (among them a gun-wielding climate scientist who wants destroy the bunker in an effort to set back research into an ozone-layer-ruining weapon of mass destruction). Fortunately, MacGyver has a few chocolate bars, a scrap of sodium metal, a cold capsule, a pair of binoculars and cigarettes.

Today much of the tech world is sad that the iPhone 3G's launch is going so miserably. But I'm sad that it's my last day at Salon.

I've accepted a job at Slate, where, starting next week, I'll be writing a twice-weekly technology column. Machinist will go on a break for a week, after which a guest blogger will bring you the latest tech dish.

I joined Salon in 2002, and since then I've written about, among other things, Smart Cars, robotic vacuum cleaners, muffin toasters, voting machines, architecture and 9/11, Tower Seven, Bill Clinton, Terri Schiavo, Florida's elections, "The Wisdom of Crowds," Malcolm Gladwell, Linux, Daniel Levitin, the copyright industries, Lawrence Lessig, The New York Times, Martha Stewart, a mnemonic to remember the Solar System's planets, Google, garlic, stem cells, Comcast, Apple, Speedo, taxes, Social Security, Antonin Scalia, Barack Obama, the robots' plan to take over the Earth, Howard Stern, Stringer Bell, Current TV, campaign finance reform, MoveOn, Howard Dean, Nintendo, Total Information Awareness, Java, Alice Waters, "The West Wing," Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the Washington Post, Judy Miller, and Hurricane Katrina.

I'm pretty sure there's no other news outlet on the planet which would have given me such latitude, and I thank everyone here at Salon for that. I also want to thank all the readers who've read my work, not to mention praised me, hounded me, kept me up late at night swearing at the screen. Don't ever change.

-- Farhad Manjoo

But there's a silver lining to one of the most bone-headed legal decisions in recent times.

Update: This post has been updated with comments from Viacom.

In the fall of 1987, a freelance reporter named Michael Dolan learned that judge Robert Bork kept an account at Potomac Video, a D.C. rental shop. This was at the height of the contentious and ultimately failed Senate confirmation hearings for Bork's nomination to the Supreme Court -- so naturally, Dolan thought there was a story here, and he went to work on getting a peek at Bork's video rental history.

It wasn't hard work. Dolan popped into Potomac Video one afternoon and asked if he could look at Bork's movie file. "There sure are a lot of them," the assistant manager replied. "Is it OK if I make a Xerox copy?"

That was OK with Dolan; weeks later, he published Bork's rental history in the D.C. alt-weekly the Washington City Paper.

Bork's taste in movies was itself unremarkable ("First off, despite what all you pervs were hoping, there's not an X in the bunch, and hardly an R," Dolan wrote). But the publication sparked outrage from groups on the right and the left -- including the ACLU and People for the American Way, which had vehemently opposed Bork's nomination.

A car small enough to alter your relationship with the city.

Let's start with the bad: The Smart Fortwo, the strikingly diminutive two-seat alterna-car you've likely seen zipping through your neighborhood in the past few weeks, is underpowered. Its three-cylinder engine seems to regard the act of your foot slamming on the gas not as a command but a gentle request, one to be pondered for a lazy second before any action is necessary. If you have to take off quickly to escape an oncoming behemoth -- a Honda Civic, say -- you'd be better off ejecting and making a run for it.

The Smart's automatic transmission, too, is simply awful, shifting from first to second as haltingly as a band geek on a blind date with a cheerleader. The brakes are squishy, sinking deep into the floor before they engage. And the tiny ride's suspension leaves something to be desired -- namely, a bit of protection for your throbbing, pothole-crushed behind.

But traverse the city for just 10 or 20 minutes in the Smart and the truth will hit you like a Hummer on its way to the repo lot. While just large enough to realize, on the inside, the comforts of a sedan, the Smart is perhaps the first modern, street-legal car small enough to completely upend your relationship with the city.

Two years ago, Bill Gates announced his plan to leave Microsoft as a full-time employee and turn his attention instead to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest philanthropic organization in the world.

The years since haven't been Microsoft's best: Its Vista operating system bombed, and online, the software company lost further ground to Google, a failure culminating in its now-best-forgotten effort to purchase Yahoo.

Gates' reputation, though, has only improved. Today is Gates' last day at Microsoft; he will continue to serve as the company's chairman (and will remain its largest shareholder), but he's said he'll spend 80 percent of his time at the foundation.

Once the most despised fellow in business, in the last decade, Gates' philanthropic work has cemented his standing as ... there's no casual way to say this, he's the leading statesman of our times.

He records the orgies, of course; at the time of his arrest, he had 5,000 subscribers paying $30 a month for access to his overlit, overdramatic videos.

McGowan and his associates now face charges of racketeering and prostitution, but his defense attorney, Lawrence Walters, believes the prosecution's case can be undone with a simple observation: Orgies, Walters says, are as American as apple pie. It can sense your facial expressions -- it knows when you're smiling, blinking, wincing -- and, even better, if you think "lift," "pull," "rotate left" or a number of other standard game commands, the directives materialize on the screen.

Tan Le, the company's president, told me that the firm had spent much R&D time perfecting a way to bring mind-reading tech to the masses.

Apple put out a press release today announcing a milestone: The company has now sold more than 5 billion songs through iTunes.

To put that into perspective, if you pile 5 billion digital downloads atop each other, they'll form a tower tall enough to ... well, OK, it'll be a completely invisible tower, as digital downloads have no three-dimensional physical presence, but you get the idea. It's two or three road-trips' worth of music, at least.

But let's get back to this business of digital downloads lacking any physical presence. This idea -- the notion that music, now, is just math, just information floating about the ether -- turns out to be of some importance. Apple has sold us 5 billion songs, but do we really own that music?

Not most of it. People seem dimly aware of this, but it bears repeating: The vast majority of the songs we've bought through iTunes are gummed up with FairPlay, a digital-rights management scheme that Apple cooked up years ago to satisfy the recording industry.

Two big fun things hit the Web today. The first is Firefox 3, the latest version of everyone's favorite browser (unless your favorite browser is Opera, IE, or Safari). Download the official release at 10 a.m. Pacific time today. (Quick review: Firefox 3 has a few great features, but if you run many add-ons, you might consider waiting for the extensions to be ported over to the new version.)

Here's the happier thing: The Spore Creator, the first bit of public code from the much-anticipated video game Spore, is now available for download.

Spore, of course, is Will Wright's next video game. You may remember Will Wright from his previous hits -- SimCity and The Sims, say?

Spore, which Wright's fans have been salivating over for years, has been called Sim Everything, or Sim Evolution: It lets you watch and guide the development of a species from the lowest scale -- the cellular level -- all the way to the largest, when your species acquires advanced intelligence and can hop through outer space (in other words, it becomes Snoop Dogg).

The other day I and several other bloggers pointed out that when Steve Jobs said he was making the iPhone "more affordable" by reducing its sales price from $399 to $199, he wasn't telling the full story.

In the United States, when you buy the new iPhone, you've also got to sign up to a two-year deal with AT&T, and AT&T has raised the price of its iPhone service plans.

As I calculated it, the new iPhone would set you back $40 more than the old phone over two years. Now Gizmodo has a new calculation incorporating other charges; it shows that the new iPhone costs $1,975 over two years, compared to the old phone's price tag of $1,815 over two years -- in other words, the new phone is $160 more than the old phone.

According to his employees, Apple chief Steve Jobs is simply a fabulous fellow to work for, more beloved than just about any other big-tech CEO. Jobs' workers love him so dearly, indeed, that they seem willing to take pay cuts in return for the pleasure of laboring on his many visions.

On the other hand, there's Jerry Yang, Yahoo's co-founder and CEO, who finds favor with far fewer of his employees. Sure, one or two Yahoos think the company can do no wrong, that "the only downside is that they took the water bottles out of the break room and substituted it for fresh fruit which is flown in daily from around the world," to quote one employee.

But a great many are fed up with the company's recent disorganization and confusion. As one worker puts it: "We are watched every moment of the day and not given the tools to do the kind of work we could be doing. The managers don't treat us with dignity or respect and the stress is terrible."

The people at Smart just brought over a slick new tiny car for me to test-drive for the week. I aim to put the thing through its paces, gauging its gas mileage and its ability to squeeze into tight parking spots.

For this, I'm going to drive around San Francisco quite a bit. But driving around pointlessly seems a bit immoral these days. How to get around this? I'm going to give you a ride!

Here's the plan: You, faithful reader, live in San Francisco and intend to get from Point A to Point B sometime this week (from now to June 17). Good news, I'm here to take you where you like.

Some rules: These trips must be arranged in advance. I won't schedule any trips before 2 p.m. or after 8 p.m. And you've got to be alone, because the Smart car seats just two.

In addition, you've got to agree to a short interview about what you think of the car, and you should be OK with your name and photo appearing in print and/or on video.

A stupid prank -- kids throw drinks at drive-through workers -- hits the big time.

Last summer, a dastardly YouTube-fueled prank spread through teen boy circles in the Northeast. The trick worked like this: A clutch of kids would pull up to a fast-food drive-through window and order drinks. When the cashier handed over the cold beverages, the kids would throw the big-gulps back through the window, yell "Fire in the hole!" and speed off. Then they'd post video of the attack on YouTube, prompting others to do the same.

I know, riotous. Apparently this was something of a sensation, with police urging vigilance among fast-wood workers, and local papers and news stations tsk-tsking the deviance of a generation.

But the videos weren't especially popular, and they didn't spread very far. A Google search for "fire in the hole" yields, at the top, this video at Break.com (posted below) compiling several such attacks. It was posted a year ago, and has racked up almost 700,000 views, which is respectable but certainly not in the league of a full-blown Internet meme.

AT&T raises its service price just as Apple cuts the cost of its phones.

According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, many people have held off buying the iPhone for one main reason -- it's too expensive.

In his speech at the Worldwide Developers Conference this morning, Jobs said that 56 percent of the people who've looked at, but decided not to buy, the iPhone cite price as their main concern. That's why, Jobs said, the company is making the device "more affordable" for everyone -- the new iPhone will sell at $199 rather than $399 for the low-end 8 GB model.

But in the United States, at least, the price cut will not make for a "more affordable" deal for customers. That's because the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone, AT&T, plans to raise the price of its unlimited-data plan by $10, the company announced in a press release (spotted by Saul Hansell at the NYT).

Because AT&T will require iPhone customers to sign a two-year service contract, the $10-per-month price hike adds $240 to the full cost of a new iPhone. That is, AT&T's data-plan price hike exceeds Steve Jobs' $200 iPhone sticker-price cut.

Well, there's a new iPhone.

As everyone expected, Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled a new version of his much-adored phone at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco Monday morning.

The new phone has 3G networking capabilities, allowing it to pull up Web pages and e-mail attachments more than twice as fast as the current model. It will also include GPS, so it can pinpoint your movements on a map and give you street-by-street driving directions.

And the new iPhone will be much cheaper than the old model: The 8GB iPhone, which used to sell for $399, will go for $199. The 16GB model will sell for $299.

So when can you get it? The 3G iPhone will be available in 22 countries starting on July 11, Jobs said. It'll go on sale in 48 more countries over the months to come.

For all the anticipation surrounding the announcement, Jobs was surprisingly reticent about the new device. He gave no live demo and didn't show a close-up video of the new phone in his hand.

Finding the best guesses in a thicket of rumors.

We'll know what's in the new iPhone shortly after 10 a.m. Pacific -- that's when Apple CEO Steve Jobs starts his presentation in San Francisco -- but in the meantime, lets sort through the rumors to get at the most-likely specs of Apple's new mobile:

3G networking: This is certain. Apple and AT&T have confirmed that the second-generation iPhone will have faster data speeds than today's model, which uses a slower networking system called EDGE.

A more open operating system: This is also guaranteed. Apple introduced a software development kit, or SDK, for the iPhone months ago, allowing third-party developers to create programs for the new model (and current models).

GPS: This is a near certainty. According to several reports over the last few months -- including a confirmation by Engadget -- the new phone will include GPS mapping capabilities.

It'll be cheaper: This one's not nearly as certain, but seems probable. Reports in recent days suggest that Apple, reconsidering its previous strategy, is now allowing phone carriers to subsidize the cost of the iPhone when customers buy a mobile plan. According to USA Today's sources, the phone, which now goes for $399, could sell for as low as $199.
