Contributing reporter Lee Fang responds

The office of Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon sent Salon the following response to Lee Fang's piece, Mon. January 30 piece, "D.C. lobbyist aids Rep. McKeon's Wife."

We believe that the factual inaccuracies in Lee Fang's piece, used as grounds for the author's personal speculations, provide for a very misleading article.

First, contrary to Fang’s false assertion that Mr. Valente donated to Patricia McKeon in an effort to circumvent maximum campaign contribution laws, Mr. Valente has not maxed out to Congressman McKeon. In fact, Mr. Valente has not contributed to Congressman McKeon’s “McKeon for Congress” campaign committee at all.

Second, contrary to Mr. Fangs inaccurate assertion that Patricia was the only state candidate to receive donations from the Fund for American Opportunity, Patricia was not in fact the only state candidate to receive a donation. If you click on the link in the article, you will see several state candidates listed on the group’s contribution report. In addition to these contributions to state candidates, the Fund for American Opportunity has given to several GOP state party organizations. Additionally, it is also instructive that the report Mr. Fang references in his piece is only a 6 month contribution report.

Letter to GOP boss: By your rule I could not endorse Democrat Thomas Jefferson over Republican Lindsay Lohan

Dear Mr. Haney:

I am in receipt of your recent letter concerning my endorsement of Felicia Rotellini for Arizona Attorney General. In that letter, you state that I have violated the "Haney Rule," -- apparently crafted and instituted upon your suggestion -- by using my own independent judgment and endorsing the best person for the job. Since I am the only Republican elected to the position of Arizona Attorney General in the last twenty years and since I led all candidates on the ballot in 1990 and 1994 and served eight years as AG, it seemed to me that I might be in a position to independently assess who would be the best person to be our next Attorney General. In this year's election, in my judgment, it is not even close. Felicia Rotellini will be an outstanding Attorney General.

Many Republicans spent the better part of this year arguing that Mr. [Tom] Horne is unfit to hold the office of Attorney General and that people should vote for Andrew Thomas. Then, like Mr. Thomas, on the day after he lost they endorsed Mr. Horne. I found their arguments unconvincing before and after the election. But their lack of logic is reflected in your "rule."

The Republican attack dogs can dish it out, but they can't take it. That's why they're calling in the FBI -- and stomping on freedom of the press in the process -- to investigate their false and scurrilous charges that Salon's Henry Hyde exposé came from the White House.

Pity the poor lynch mob. After we revealed that Hyde, the congressman who will sit in judgment on President Clinton's sex life, had an extramarital skeleton in his own closet, the Republicans went berserk. House Majority Whip Tom DeLay announced today that the Republican leadership has asked FBI chief Louis Freeh to "investigate allegations that certain associates and allies of the White House have embarked on a campaign to intimidate members of Congress." Asked what evidence he had, other than vague and unsourced media reports, that the White House was involved in Salon's Hyde story, DeLay said, "I don't have any evidence."

Well, there's a good reason why DeLay doesn't have any evidence. His allegations are completely false.

The pros and cons of Libertarianism laid out at four major Web sites

electric minds

Even with specific issues such as education on the front burner, the
discussion still boils down to essential philosophical differences. "To say
that you don't want to be part of the decision-making process," notes Jon
Lebkowsky, "embodied in the consensus, and that you don't want to be bound
by the decisions that emerge from that process... is to say that you don't
want to sign the social contract. It's a mountain-man sort of thing..."
Tooch objects: "I don't see how allowing me, my neighbors, schools,
teachers, etc., to interact freely, to choose how to deal with one another
is analogous to a mountain man on his solitary peak. Rather, it's simply a
recognition that personal choice and voluntary arrangements are almost
always preferable to group decisions imposed upon all."

For two weeks, the pros and cons of Libertarianism have been laid out at
four major Web sites, including Electric
Minds. Having heard and weighed the arguments on all sides, isn't it
time you spoke up
for what you believe in?

In order to participate in Conve
rsations, you need to be registered
and logged
in to electric minds.

Feed

The debate at FEED rages on, though
the libertarians seem to be out-numbering everyone else.
Mark LaRochelle explains: "The libertarian ideal ... has something to
do with the sense of rule of the people (self-government), and a great
deal to do with the protection of individual liberty from autocracy and
mob rule
alike."

Another reader writes in to say: "The idea that government is
supposed to go about remedying the wrongs of the world makes my hair
stand on end. There's no end to the wrongs you can find once you start
making a good living off them."

FEED's Steven Johnson responds: "But the government *is* supposed to remedy
those wrongs when a bank teller absconds with your life savings? That's
not very
libertarian, I'd say. Why not let the market decide which banks have the
most honest tellers?"

Salon

In the latest posts in this discussion, which now numbers over 200 posts, a
critic of libertarianism argues that no culture based only on capitalism
has long endured and decries the fact that the movement is dominated by
white men. Libertarians respond by arguing, first, that the U.S. is the
longest continous government in the world and second, that there are many
women and people of color who are either libertarians or subscribe to
free-market ideas -- including Walter Williams, Thomas Sowell and, of
course, Ayn Rand.
